The company develops the world’s leading spatial data platform, eponymously named Matterport. The platform offers a myriad of capabilities that appeal to vast swathes of users, including hoteliers, realtors, facilities managers, vacation rental house owners, retail outlets, insurers, homeowners, and professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. And if you happen to be part of this target market, you may be wondering how much Matterport costs. In that case, you are in luck as this Matterport pricing explained article seeks to answer precisely that.

History of Matterport

Formative Years

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Matterport is a publicly-traded company that is just over ten years old. It was founded in 2011 by Dave Gausebeck and Matt Bell and grew progressively as a budding upstart thanks to investor funding as well as its vision to revolutionize the real estate space. In its formative years, Matterport focused on developing a 3D capture camera and an online viewing system, which was eventually launched in the second half of 2013. The platform enabled users to automatically create, modify, experience, and access cloud-based digital models of physical interior spaces.

2014 to 2017

In the summer of 2014, the company began rolling out capturing devices, the Matterport Pro 3D camera, in a move that expanded its capabilities even further. According to pundits, the camera came to define Matterport’s operations and its origin story even though it was released much later than the viewing platform.

At that time, too, Matterport had not yet started supporting 3D capture via mobile phones. But the company hoped it would eventually support this capability after developing applications that would enable smartphones, tablets, and accessory 3D camera owners to capture and upload 3D scans. Also, Matterport hoped mobile phone technology would advance to accommodate this vision.

Indeed, the Matterport Pro 3D camera complemented the company’s initial offering. Customers could use them to take 3D scans of the interior spaces and upload the files to the cloud, where Matterport’s revolutionary platform would process the data into high-resolution 3D models. The platform would then allow users to view the processed content (virtual tour) via its website and third-party platforms that ran on the company’s cloud.

Throughout its formative years, however, Matterport wanted to be more than just a camera company. In line with this spirit, the company in 2015 envisioned the launch of its own VR headsets to rival the likes of Oculus, enabling users to tour the 3D virtual spaces in a more immersive manner. But Matterport had still not yet rolled out 3D capture capabilities for mobile phone users at this time.

2018 to Present

In 2018, Matterport hired its current President and CEO, RJ Pittman. Pittman has since modified the company’s direction by making it a data company that leverages the millions of data points collected whenever 3D scans are uploaded to the software platform. This renewed focus enables Matterport to digitize spatial data providing building intelligence on different spaces as well as targeted and accurate results to search queries.

In 2021, Matterport finally launched the Matterport capture app for smartphones, extending its services to mobile phone users. Given that mobile phones are not equipped with tools and sensors to capture 3D scans, Matterport developed the Capture platform, which relies on AI – trained using its vast library of spatial data – to convert 2D images to 3D models.

Matterport has also expanded its capabilities and offerings, cementing its place as a leader in the 3D virtual tours space. So, what is Matterport?

What is Matterport?

Matterport is a platform that enables users to capture 3D scans of their spaces, digitize them by creating a 3D virtual twin, and subsequently promote and manage the 3D tours online. The platform also offers spatial data analysis intelligence that enables facilities managers, for example, to narrow down the number of properties that have specific attributes from a list of thousands of similar properties.

Depending on the situation, users can also use the 3D tours as a lodestar to guide the construction of spaces that are similar to what is captured within the Matterport digitized models. For instance, Matterport can generate schematic floor plans from the scans as well as models that can be imported into programs such as Revit, 3ds Max, ReCap, or AutoCAD.

Matterport also offers professional capture services. Under this arrangement, the company lets you schedule a professional 3D scan wherein you hire a technician from its network of professionals. Matterport then sends you the final 3D virtual tour via email within 24 hours.

The company also sells 3D cameras, with the current iteration being the Matterport Pro2 3D camera, released in 2017. Regarded as the gold standard for 3D capture, the 134 megapixels camera is ideal for use in various settings, including commercial buildings, apartments, hotels, and homes. Along with the Pro2 camera, Matterport also develops and sells the Axis(TM) motorized mount to facilitate quality scans on mobile phones.

It is worth noting that Matterport offers these hardware and software offerings at a fee. This brings us to the most fundamental bit of this article: Matterport pricing.

How Much Does Bentley Microstation Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/bentley-microstation-pricing/ Tue, 18 Jan 2022 13:03:00 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/?p=46970 Historically, computer-aided design (CAD) software programs have always been at the top end of the pricing spectrum. So much so that a majority are priced at rates way above other industries’ applications, e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud or the Microsoft Office Suite. Importantly, the cost and pricing model of CAD software arises from a combination of factors, including the value users draw from the applications, which in turn influences what they are willing to pay, the development costs, and more. So, how does Bentley MicroStation pricing stack up against other CAD programs?

At Scan2CAD, we regularly update our readers on the pricing of various CAD applications. In this guide, we explore Bentley MicroStation, specifically Bentley MicroStation pricing. As such, by reading through this article as well as other guides in our CAD software pricing series, you can establish how MicroStation stacks up against other programs.

Firstly, though, let’s discuss Bentley MicroStation and its developer, Bentley Systems Inc.

About Bentley Systems

Not to be confused with Bentley Motors Limited, a British manufacturer and marketer of luxury SUVs and cars, Bentley Systems, Inc. is a Pennsylvania-headquartered infrastructure engineering software company listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Founded in 1984, the American-based company has grown over the years. Currently, it boasts a presence in 172 countries, where it has set up sales, development, and a bevy of other departments, employing over 4,000 people.

Bentley Systems offers infrastructure-oriented software intended to satisfy the global economy as well as the environment. It’s software solutions and trademarked brands include ProjectWise, Seequent, iTwin, AssetWise, CUBE, MicroStation, and dozens more. They are used by organizations of different sizes, both public and private, operating in multiple industries.

For instance, the software programs are used in the design, construction, and operations of structures within various segments, such as transportation (roads, bridges, rail), water and wastewater, mining, buildings, and industrial facilities. While the solutions indeed offer many benefits and are used by thousands, as evidenced by Bentley Systems’ 2020 revenues of about $801 million, this article will focus on only one of the company’s offerings.

According to the 2020 annual report, Bentley Systems generates its revenue from subscriptions, perpetual licenses, and services, a model that is evident when you look at Bentley MicroStation pricing.

However, before exploring how much Bentley MicroStation costs, let’s understand what the software is all about, including its capabilities and history.

About Bentley MicroStation

Bentley microstation interface

Bentley MicroStation Interface (source)

Bentley Systems describes MicroStation as its modeling and simulation application that leverages various reusable components for visualization, solid (3D) modeling, editing, and modification of graphics, among other capabilities. In addition, MicroStation supports flexible documentation, collaboration, modeling/assembly sequences, annotation, and more.

It is no wonder that Bentley Systems markets MicroStation as “the CAD leader for infrastructure design.” A more detailed look at the available tools and capabilities point to the reasoning behind this marketing tagline. But we will handle that a bit later. First, let’s understand MicroStation from a historical point of view.

Bentley MicroStation was first released in 1986. At the time, it was a design file (DGN, MicroStation’s default file format) reader and editor. It could also plot DGN files. The second edition, released in 1987, introduced read and write capabilities.

In the 1990’s Bentley Systems introduced additional capabilities and features. As a result, MicroStation offered 2D and 3D CAD tools, colored icons, dialogs that could be docked, the ability to assign names to levels, a DWG translator, settings manager, binary raster support, movie generation, Accudraw, and more. The new features made the software an interactive CAD program.

The turn of the century saw the development and subsequent introduction of the eighth version of MicroStation (V8) in 2001. Along with the new edition, which introduced numerous improvements to the software, Bentley released V8 DGN, an IEEE-754-based 64-bit file format.

Over the years, Bentley Systems has released newer versions. Currently, the software is at V10, also known as the MicroStation CONNECT Edition, with the latest release being the 16th edition, which was dropped in June 2021. Therefore, if you were to buy and install the current version, the build number would read 10.16.00.80. The first two figures represent the version and edition, respectively.

Supported Operating Systems

The latest version of Bentley MicroStation is currently only available on Microsoft Windows, continuing a tradition that began in the 1990s. MicroStation V4, released in the early 1990s, ran on Windows. In the past, some Macintosh and Unix-based operating systems also supported the software.

Bentley MicroStation Packages

The MicroStation CONNECT Edition (V10), released on September 1, 2015, was the first version of the software connected to Bentley Systems’ cloud services. As a result, it offered improved connected workflows and personalized experiences. With the release came enhanced capabilities such as an intuitive and modern ribbon-based interface.

It also included search functionality and combined all file operations and settings in a single location. For example, to get to the settings, simply click File Tab > Settings > User. Similarly, to get to the file operations section/window, simply click File Tab > Settings > File.

Can I Get BricsCAD for Free? https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/bricscad-free/ Wed, 08 Dec 2021 16:10:25 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/?p=46863 BricsCAD has attracted attention from various factions for its capabilities that rival Autodesk’s flagship product, AutoCAD. BricsCAD is the most cost-effective CAD software, boasting superior performance, 100% .DWG compatibility, and flexible licensing. What’s even more compelling is that you can use all the premium features of BricsCAD for free, as we’ll discuss later in this article.

Quoting a 2015 analysis exploring whether BricsCAD is a real alternative to AutoCAD, the US Library of Congress’ (LOC) Sustainability of Digital Formats website, which offers information about digital content formats, pointed out that 100% .DWG compatibility is the single most crucial factor in considering alternative CAD products. Boasting this capability and more, BricsCAD, which was first released in 2005 by Bricsys, now an affiliate of Hexagon AB, has grown to become a formidable CAD software comparable to or perhaps even better than other CAD programs.

Yet, the 100% compatibility attribute is not even the main differentiator. What sets BricsCAD apart from the likes of AutoCAD is its cost. Bricsys even states that its product is “the most cost-effective CAD software with .dwg compatibility, flexible licensing, and superior performance.”

About BricsCAD

BricsCAD is a modern CAD software built for designers and engineers. Available in several packages, BricsCAD offers distinct capabilities to different users.

For instance, if you choose BricsCAD Lite, you will access a powerful 2D drafting software program. On the other hand, the BricsCAD Pro package provides access to 2D drafting and 3D modeling software.

The third package, BricsCAD BIM, offers AI-powered building information modeling (BIM) capabilities needed by designers, architects, and engineers working in the construction industry. Lastly, the BricsCAD Mechanical package provides mechanical engineers and product designers access to advanced mechanical design tools.

Simply, BricsCAD offers a complete and comprehensive suite of design products anchored in a rich history that traces back to the early aughts. Version 1 of BricsCAD was first released in 2005 but had been in development since 2002 when Bricsys was established.

The release of V1 indeed set a robust foundation for a product that has survived constraints occasioned by AutoCAD’s dominance as well as the fact that .DWG is Autodesk’s proprietary file format that contains copyrighted objects. For instance, you are likely to see a warning message when you use AutoCAD to open a .DWG file created using BricsCAD. The message will warn that the DWG file was saved by a software program that was not developed or licensed by Autodesk, BricsCAD’s 100% .DWG compatibility notwithstanding.

Despite such setbacks, which may put off users who may not be familiar with the fact that the warning message is absolutely harmless, BricsCAD has continued to thrive owing to its powerful tools and, more importantly, pricing. In fact, you can use BricsCAD for free. But we’ll get to the pricing comparison in a bit. First, though, let’s talk about BricsCAD’s tools.

BricsCAD Capabilities and Features

BricsCAD has emerged as a powerful and comprehensive alternative to AutoCAD. For instance, BricsCAD offers the following features and tools:

  • Full Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) support
  • 2D constraint management
  • 3D modeling (BricsCAD Pro and higher) and 3D auto-parametrization
  • 3D constraint management
  • Deformable modeling
  • Support for third-party applications
  • Rendering capabilities
  • AI-based modeling (BricsCAD BIM and BricsCAD Ultimate)
  • Structural and HVAC toolsets (BricsCAD BIM)
  • Assembly modeling (BricsCAD Mechanical and higher)
  • Sheet metal design
  • Bill of materials

Notably, these features are tools are restricted to specific pricing tiers. However, they are still available when using BricsCAD for free. With this in mind, let’s delve into the pricing aspect of BricsCAD.

In addition to its capabilities, BricsCAD’s status as a powerful alternative to AutoCAD is also born from the following factors:

  • BricsCAD is easy to use, meaning that it does not have a steep learning curve
  • It requires low transition cost, given that it is cheaper; you can even use BricsCAD for free – this pricing aspect makes it an attractive option for users looking for AutoCAD’s functionalities but at a lower cost
  • With V19, BricsCAD became available to Mac users
  • It has a community of over 1,200 registered application developers, partnerships in over 80 countries, and authorized resellers
  • Bricsys has embraced web-based technology (cloud services) and even offers BricsCAD 24/7, which enables users to access designs and documents from any device and location, thus facilitating collaboration
  • BricsCAD offers comprehensive product and developer documentation, release notes, and educational material – this helps those who wish to learn more about the software and how to use its many features
  • BricsCAD offers support services
  • Its user interface is somewhat similar to other CAD software programs, including AutoCAD
  • It is said to be 2.7x faster than AutoCAD at the opening .DWG files

BricsCAD vs. AutoCAD: Pricing

AutoCAD

Autodesk slowly phased out perpetual licensing in favor of subscription plans. Starting January 2016, new users of most individual Autodesk products could no longer purchase the software using the traditional perpetual licensing format. Notably, existing perpetual license holders would still retain these licenses but would need to keep their software up-to-date by using the newly introduced Maintenance subscription.

Over the next two years, Autodesk gradually transitioned software purchases to the subscription-based options currently available today. As a result, the cost of its products, including AutoCAD, has soared.

Previously, under the perpetual licensing format, users could purchase an AutoCAD program for a one-time price of $4,000. Today, however, the same program is available at a monthly subscription cost of $220 or an annual subscription of $1,775 (as of December 2021).

Comparatively, the new model is more expensive for users than the older pricing format, particularly over the long term. This cost makes it difficult for would-be one-time users of AutoCAD to pay for the subscription. Instead, they opt for free DWG/DXF editors.

The pricing may also compel users to look for alternatives, and this is where BricsCAD comes in.

BricsCAD

Unlike AutoCAD, BricsCAD has retained a perpetual licensing offering for its users. Its pricing structure (one-time fee as of December 1, 2021) for each tier is as follows:

  • BricsCAD Lite at US$590

How Much Does BricsCAD Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/bricscad-pricing/ Tue, 31 Aug 2021 19:47:44 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=46566 If you are a CAD drafter or designer looking for BrisCAD, it is important to first understand what it is used for and what edition you need to calculate the required budget. Each of the BricsCAD editions has its BricsCAD pricing.

Most CAD programs including BricsCAD have moved from one-time product purchases to monthly or yearly subscriptions. This has helped bring down the costs since some of the CAD programs required tens to hundreds of thousands to purchase. With the monthly subscriptions, CAD drafters and designers can pay as little as just some hundred dollars to be able to use software for a month or year.

Before delving into BricsCAD pricing, it is important to understand what BrisCAD is, how many editions are out there, and what each of these editions can be used for.

What is BricsCAD?

Figure 1. Excavator assembly drawing was drawn using BricsCAD (source)

BricsCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) software application developed by Bricsys, a Belgium-based company founded in 2002 and headquartered in Ghent. It acquired intellectual property rights from Ledas for parametric design tools that are constraints-based thus allowing the company to start developing applications related to assembly design and direct modeling.

Bricsys founder is Erik de Keyser and he is a long-time CAD entrepreneur.

Besides Ghent in Belgium, Bricsys has other centers in Romania, Bucharest, Russia, and Singapore.

The company is also the founding member of the Open Design Alliance. In December 2016, it joined the BuildingSMART International consortium.

In 2018, Bricsys was purchased by Hexagon AB, a company based in Sweden.

BricsCAD Editions

Nowadays, BicsCAD is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems.

It comes in seven editions though before it’s the current version (V21) there were eight available editions, which included the BricsCAD Platinum. The release of V21 saw the functionality of BricsCAD Platinum moved to BricsCAD Pro and the BricsCAD Platinum was done away with.

So, let’s look at the functionality of each of the editions in detail:

1. BricsCAD Shape

Drawing done using bricscad shape

Figure 2. Drawing done using BricsCAD shape (source)

This is a free-of-charge conceptual modeling tool that was released by Bricsys in 2018.

It is made from the BricsCAD solid modeling core and its native file format is .DWG. It also has a simplified user interface that reduces the command options to make modeling easier.

It includes a library of materials, parametric doors and windows, and a set of 3D objects and furniture.

It can be upgraded to any of the five commercial editions whenever the user feels the need to by paying the subscription fees.

2. BricsCAD 30-day Free Trial Download

This allows users to experience the full functionality of the commercial BricsCAD Ultimate Edition for 30 days after which the users are required to pay to continue using the program’s functionality and failure to which the program is automatically reverted to BricsCAD Shape.

The user can upgrade the free version to any of the five commercial editions during the 30 days trial period by paying for the subscription fees and receiving a license key.

3. BricsCAD Lite

Figure 3. A Drawing was drawn using BricsCAD Lite (Source: techevate.com)

This edition was referred to as ‘BricsCAD Classic’ in version V20 and below. It is optimized for 2D drafting and its native file format if .DWG.

It also offers LISP API customization and the ability to automate repetitive tasks.

4. BricsCAD Pro

It contains or the functionalities of the BricsCAD Lite, in addition to 3D modeling, standard part libraries, a materials library, a rendering engine, and an Autodesk AutoCAD ObjectARX, a development system that allows the use of hundreds of third-party application programs.

In version V21 and above, the BircsCAD Pro also includes all the functionalities of the BricsCAD Platinum which has since been deprecated. These functionalities include 3D constraint system management, TIN surface creation, surface entity creation and lofting, deformable modeling, automatic design intent recognition, basic assembly creation, and editing, and automatic healing of imported solid geometry.

5. BricsCAD BIM

Drawing drawn using Bricscad bim

Figure 4. A Drawing was drawn using BricsCAD BIM (source)

This comes with all the functionalities of BricsCAD Pro in addition to Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow.

It uses ACIS as its core modeler and thus allows push and pull free form concept models development.

Users can also low level-of-development (LOD) massing models to Building Information Model (BIM) using BIMIFY, which is an AI-based workflow.

In version V21 and above, the sheet set generation has been automated.

6. BricsCAD Mechanical

This edition is meant for 3D mechanical components and parts designs.

It comes with all the functionalities of the BricsCAD Pro and an assembly modeling workflow, sheet metal parts creation using lofted solid representations, bill of materials, kinetic animations, and exploded view creation capabilities.

7. BricsCAD Ultimate

This combines the functionalities of all the BricsCAD editions.

Bricsys 24/7

This is a cloud collaboration software as a service (SaaS) to offer a common data environment (CDE).

It was called “Chapoo” before November 2017.

It comes in two versions; the Bricsys 24/7 and the BricsCAD Cloud.

The BricsCAD Cloud allows BrisCAD users to access cloud storage, collaboration, file viewing, file locking, and file versioning. It is free of charge.

Bricsys 24/7 allows users to access a common data environment for document management and workflow automation.

BricsCAD APIs and Customization

All the BricsCAD editions use Open Design Alliance Drawing API software development platform that allows BricsCAD to write and read DWG file format, which is a file format that is very popular among Autodesk’s CAD programs.

BricsCAD users read and write into DWG files using the OPEN, NEW, SAVE and SAVE AS commands.

Through the APIs, BricsCAD provides an almost identical subcategory to AutoCAD equivalent functionalities.

The only disadvantage of BricsCAD is that it cannot read AutoCAD FAS files.

BricsCAD Pricing

Out of the seven BricsCAD editions, five editions require the users to pay an annual subscription.

Below is a breakdown of BricsCAD pricing:

  • BricsCAD Lite  – 350 USD/user/year
  • BricsCAD Pro – 720 USD /user/year
  • BricsCAD BIM – 1360 USD /user/year
  • BricsCAD Mechanical – 1290 USD /user/year
  • BricsCAD Ultimate – 1500 USD /user/Year

New users who aren’t sure about BricsCAD can first use the BricsCAD 30-day free trial download to find out if the features therein are what they are looking for. Nonetheless, to continue using the full functionalities of BricsCAD, they should pay the subscription of the specific edition that the user wants.

Conclusion

BricsCAD pricing offers CAD drafters and designers a cheaper option of a CAD program since it has two editions that require an annual subscription of less than $1K per year. For example, the minimum subscription fee of AutoDesk AutoCAD, which is one of the most used CAD software, is € 2,342 per annum.

Fusion 360 for startups

Figure 3. Fusion 360 for startups (Source)

The Free Fusion 360 for Start-Ups is a free version of the Fusion 360 available to small startups that are less than 3 years old and have less than 10 employees. It is best suited for angel-backed, venture-backed, or bootstrap startups.

The startup should have a valid website or a social media account over which it transacts and should have gross annual revenue of less than $100,000. It should also be a startup that designs or manufactures original physical products. That means that startups involved in providing services, reselling, contract manufacturing, or consultancy do not qualify for the Free Fusion 360 for Start-Ups.

Once a startup signs up for the Free Fusion 360 for Start-Ups, it should be ready to share its story with the Fusion 360 community.

The license must, however, be renewed on an annual basis as long as the startup continues to meet the requirements.

Fusion 360 for Chromebooks

The Fusion 360 for Chromebooks is only available to educational subscribers.

How to not get Fusion 360 for free

Even with the many options that are available to allow people to use the Fusion 360 for free, some may still be tempted to try and circumvent the licenses and try to download the cracked version of the Fusion 360 software. That comes with a myriad of risks including the fact that cracks are illegal.

If you install a cracked software on your computer, you provide hackers and other criminal organizations with leeway to infiltrate your computer and any other systems that the computer is connected to. It also makes you a frequent target of viruses, Trojans, and all other types of malware.

Worse still, if you install a cracked software, you risk being a victim of intellectual property theft, which can put your entire startup or business at risk since it would mean your competitors would be able to get their hands on the projects you are undertaking to stay ahead of them in the market.

To avoid these risks, it is advisable to go with the options we have listed above for using fusion 360 for free. After all, the Fusion 360 for personal use and the Free Fusion 360 for Start-Ups offers the option of extending the license annually meaning you can use these options indefinitely.

In conclusion

Fusion 360 is a powerful software that is easy to use and engineers, designers, and manufacturers can easily produce quality 3D models using it. Even for those with little knowledge about it, it is easy to learn. Besides, there is plenty of educational material online to assist with expanding your Fusion 360 skills.

One of the main advantages of using Fusion 360 is that it uses cloud technology thus easing the work for your computer especially when performing heavy tasks like rendering. Also, you can store your work on the cloud and access it from any location using any computer.

The only limitation when using Fusion 360 is that it requires a strong internet connection to allow seamless use of the cloud. Otherwise, you should enjoy most of its capabilities even without the money to subscribe to the premium version by using the Fusion 360 for free options we have stated above.

How Much Does CATIA Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/catia-pricing/ Wed, 17 Jun 2020 10:35:11 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=43749 Cost is an important consideration when selecting a CAD software application. Because of this, we at Scan2CAD regularly create comprehensive pricing articles in which we talk about products, license types, terms, and cost of the most popular CAD software applications in existence.

In this article, we would be reviewing CATIA (Computer-Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) by Dassault Systemes, a software suite for CAD, CAM, CAE, and PLM across multiple platforms. However, because of the nature of CATIA, which we would be explaining later, there are no set prices for any of the software’s products. Pricing depends on various factors and is therefore quote-based. You would have to contact CATIA’s sales team.

Knowing what factors determine the pricing you would receive is crucial to hastening the quoting processes. In this article, we will be going through the various factors that influence CATIA pricing.

Package/Configuration

CATIA has a very fast range of capabilities offered through many different products. A configuration or package in CATIA contains a number of products. The quote you receive depends on your package which in turn depends on your discipline. The disciplines CATIA covers include design and styling, construction, engineering, and systems engineering.

There are two basic types of CATIA configurations; standard configurations and custom configurations

Standard configurations contain a preset list of products that are most relevant to a field.

Custom configurations, one the other hand, are created by the customer during ordering. You can create a custom configuration by adding your desired products from the CATIA portfolio to an existing standard configuration. This means that a custom configuration is not built from scratch. Rather, products are added to a standard configuration to get a custom configuration.

Products

Products in CATIA refer to any fixed unit. The following are some of the types of products offered.

  • Standard configurations. Going by the definition of products, standard configurations, although made up of products, are considered as products themselves.
  • Add-on products. These are products that can be added to a standard configuration to create a custom configuration.
  • Shareable products. When you procure a configuration, all products within the configuration are bound under one license. Shareable products, however, come with their license keys separate from the configuration. This allows the product to be shared with multiple users.
  • Extra products. Extra products are products that come along with certain configurations or products. Not all configurations come with extra products. Extra products are neither licensed or standalone. They are free of charge and are installed along with the associated configuration or product.

License type

Every purchase CATIA configuration and product, except shareable products, come with non-sharable licenses. There are two major licensing schemes used in CATIA; Node Locked/Machine-based licensing and Concurrent licensing.

Node-locked licensing, also known as machine-based licensing, allows a product or configuration to be installed and used on one machine by a single user. A variation of this scheme known as Named user licensing allows the installation on more than one personal device. However, they can only be used by one user.

Concurrent licensing allows CATIA to be installed on multiple devices for use by multiple users. However, only the number of seats purchased can be used concurrently. For example, you install CATIA on 15 devices using a concurrent license. If you only purchased five seats, only five of these computers would be able to run CATIA simultaneously.

License term

Dassault Systemes offers various licensing terms for CATIA. You can purchase a perpetual license with annual maintenance. You can also purchase yearly, quarterly, 2-year, and 3-year licenses.

Conclusion

The complex pricing of CATIA is as a result of the numerous variables involved. Now that you have been armed with the prerequisite knowledge for a smooth quoting process, simply contact the CATIA sales team for a quote based on your requirements.

How Much Does Fusion 360 Cost? | Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/fusion-360-pricing/ Mon, 18 Nov 2019 09:49:35 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=38765 There are so many commercially available software packages today that it can be challenging to select which one is best for your application. Before choosing a CAD software, there are many factors which you must take into consideration. The two most important of these factors are cost and capability.

At Scan2CAD, we make your selection process much easier by creating comprehensive pricing articles on individual software. These articles cover software capabilities, license types, procurement methods, where to buy them, and, most importantly, their cost. In this article, we will be looking at Fusion 360, or Autodesk Fusion as it is now called, a popular software from software giants Autodesk.

Fusion 360 is a cloud-based, integrated CAD, CAM, and CAE software for product development and manufacturing. Design, manufacturing, and engineering are all united under a single package. This software is excellent for DFM (Design For Manufacture), as it ensures a smooth product development process.

The features of Fusion 360 can be classified as follows; 3D design and modeling, generative design, simulation, rapid prototyping, collaboration, documentation, and manufacturing.

When it comes to capability, there is no doubt that Fusion 360 is capable of getting the job done. However, the question of cost is far less straightforward. But do not despair. In this Fusion 360 pricing article, we will be covering the cost, license types, and discounts for the software.

Fusion 360 License Options

Autodesk, makers of Fusion 360, stopped selling perpetual licenses for all their products, including Fusion 360, from 2016. This means that you can only access the software by subscription. Typically, Autodesk products have two subscription license types, single-user licenses which can only be used by one user at a time, and multi-user licenses, which can be used by several users at a time. However, because Fusion 360 is cloud-based, it is only offered as a single-user license. You can install the software on as many devices as you require, but you can only make use of one device at a time. To make use of the software on a particular device, all you need to do is log in to your Autodesk account through the device.

How and Where to Get Fusion 360

Fusion 360 can either be bought independently or as part of the product development and manufacturing (PD&M) collection. The PD&M collection has both single-user and multi-user license options. This collection not only has the advantage of being more cost-effective but also provides a way to use Fusion 360 on a multi-user license. If you buy a PD&M  collection multi-user license, you can install the collection on as many devices as required. However, the number of simultaneous users is limited to the number of seats you purchase. If you buy three seats for your multi-user license, you can assign the entire collection, including Fusion 360, to three users for simultaneous.

There are subscription term options for Fusion 360. They are one month, one year, and three years. Before the expiration date of your license, you will receive renewal notifications 90, 45, 30, and 4 days before the day. Licenses bought through the Autodesk store will automatically renew unless you disable auto-renewal in your Autodesk account.

You can buy single-user licenses for both Fusion 360 and the PD&M collection from the Autodesk store or an authorized reseller. For multi-user licenses for the PD&M collection, you have to contact Autodesk support, as such licenses are not available for purchase on Autodesk’s site. This is because preferences for multi-user licenses differ by customers. It’s therefore best to have a conversation with an agent about what your requirements are before you purchase these licenses.

Fusion 360 Products

There are two Fusion 360 variants available. They are Fusion 360 and Fusion Team Participant. Fusion 360, or simply Fusion, is the complete CAD, CAM, and CAE package. It includes all data management and collaboration features. Fusion 360 Team Participant, on the other hand, only contains data management and collaboration features. This product allows additional users to share and view data without having to purchase the full Fusion 360 package.

Fusion 360 Pricing

Now that we have gone through the software’s capabilities, type, and license options, we will now proceed to the main Fusion 360 pricing. As was stated earlier, prices for multi-user licenses differ. Hence, you need to contact Autodesk to know the price that comes with your requirements. The table below contains the prices of single-user Fusion 360 licenses. All prices were sourced from the Autodesk store and are in US dollars.

Creo License and Subscription Options

PTC used to offer perpetual licenses for their products. These licenses required only a one-time payment and optional yearly upgrades. However, from the 1st of January 2018, PTC stopped the sale of perpetual licenses. All PTC products, including Creo, are now only available through subscription licenses. Owners of perpetual licenses may either continue to use them without upgrades or trade up to a subscription. PTC encourages owners of perpetual licenses to switch to subscription.

There are two major types of licenses for Creo. They are locked licenses and floating licenses.

1. Locked Licenses

A locked license allows Creo to run on only one device (independent work station). It restricts the use of the application to a particular device. With this type of license, you do not require a license server. Do note that the locked license is not available for some of Creo’s more expensive products, namely Creo Design Advanced Plus, Creo Design Premium, and Creo Design Premium Plus.

2. Floating Licenses

Using a floating license, you can run Creo on any device that is connected to a local network. Provided that the device is connected to the license server. However, there is a limit on the number of simultaneous users, depending on the number of seats purchased. The license server keeps count of how many licenses are checked out and assigns or denies licenses to users based on license availability.

Creo Pricing

Having gone through the different Creo packages and license options, we will now go into the actual Creo pricing. The table below shows some of the prices for both locked and floating licenses for the five Creo packages. These prices are for a one-year subscription plan. For more subscription periods and more information, contact the Creo sales team or resellers. As stated earlier, prices are not available on the PTC website. All prices were sourced from resellers and may vary slightly from one to another.

The prices of the five Creo packages (in USD) are summarised in the table below:

Creo Discounts and Freebies

Creo offers a few discounts and free package. Some of these are as follows.

1. Creo Free Trial

PTC allows new Creo users to test run the software for 30 days at no cost. During this period, the user will have access to fully functional features of Creo. After 30 days, users are expected to have made up their minds, whether Creo suits them or not.

2. Creo Educational License

PTC offers free or discounted licenses for a highly functional but limited version of Creo to students. Administered through the PTC academic program, this license is for students and teachers in primary school, secondary school, university, and college. Students do not need to go through their school to get this license. All they need is a valid student email address. Note that educational licenses expire and have to be renewed yearly.

There are several Creo educational licenses:

  • Creo University Student Edition Premium (one-year term license): This package is available for $257.00 (exclusive of tax) on the PTC online Store. It is meant for university students for their educational use. A current academic ID is required for purchase. This license provides access to all the features of Creo.
  • Creo K12 Student license: The software downloaded using the K12 Student license lacks a number of features as it is only meant to help young students as they prepare to become engineers of the future. It, therefore, has a few basic design, analysis, and simulation tools that can facilitate participation in FIRST Robotics Competitions, for example.
  • Creo Schools Premium Standalone license: The Schools Premium Standalone license software is the more fully featured of the free Creo products for students and schools. This license is designed for advanced users and requires a unique product code for each computer
  • Creo Schools Premium Lab license: The Schools Premium Lab license is designed for Creo software that can be installed on a local school server. The license is intended for use by multiple users even though it requires only one unique product code for all the computers in the network. Like the Premium Standalone license, the software in this category is also fully featured.

Alternatives to Creo

In terms of capability, Creo ranks among the best CAD software available today. However, considering its cost, you may wish to consider some alternatives. The following are some strong industry rivals of Creo.

  • Inventor – Inventor by Autodesk is a professional 3D modeling software for design and manufacturing. Its features include design and modeling, simulation, visualization, and collaboration.
  • SolidWorks – Developed by Dassault systems, SolidWorks is a solid modeling and analysis CAD software. This software is excellent for mechanical/electrical design, simulation, visualization and rendering, and manufacturing.

How Much Does Inventor Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/inventor-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/inventor-pricing/#comments Sat, 19 Oct 2019 14:26:29 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=38191 There are several factors that you should consider when selecting the best CAD software package for your application. Two significant factors among these are cost and capability. How much does the software cost? Can it get the job done? We at Scan2CAD have been helping CAD users answer these crucial questions by providing comprehensive pricing articles on various CAD software packages.

In this article, we will be exploring Inventor Professional, a powerful 3D modeling software by Autodesk. We will go through all things Inventor pricing, including its features, capabilities, cost, purchasing options, and where to get the software.

Before we go into the main Inventor pricing, it is essential that we first learn about its capabilities and features, so that you know what exactly you are getting for your money.

Inventor, also known as Autodesk Inventor Professional, is a 3D mechanical modeling CAD software for professional product design and engineering. This software allows you to model highly complex 3D parts and assemblies, and also create detailed 2D working drawings. Inventor also enables you to simulate your model in order to analyze its behavior in real-life situations such as loading, force application, and motion. In addition to these, you can also visualize and render your model by creating animations, exploded views, and photorealistic views of it.

In summary, Inventor has features that are capable of doing the following; 3D mechanical design, tube and pipe design, sheet metal design, electrical systems design, simulation, visualization, documentation, data management, and collaboration.

Having gone through all these features and capabilities, it is evident that Inventor is very capable of getting the job done. We can now move on to other aspects of Inventor pricing.

How and where to get Inventor

Autodesk stopped the sales of perpetual licenses for all their software, including Inventor. Currently, all Autodesk packages are only available through subscription licenses. However, perpetual licenses for previous versions (Inventor 2015 and below) are still functional. There are two main avenues for purchasing Inventor. From the official Autodesk online store, and from an authorized reseller. Where you buy your product between these two is dependent on the type of license, and the subscription term you require.

There are two subscription license types for Inventor; Standalone (Single-user) license and Network (Multi-user) license. While Single-user licenses can be purchased from either the Autodesk online store or an official reseller, Multi-user licenses can only be purchased from authorized resellers, and for good reasons. Different users have varying requirements, such as the number of seats, for Multi-user licenses. Also, Multi-user licenses are relatively complicated to set up and have various possible configurations, depending on the customers’ preference. Because of these, Autodesk only offers Multi-user Inventor licenses through local authorized resellers. To procure this license, a customer has to discuss in-depth with the reseller about their industry, preferences, size of the business, and budget. Using this information, the reseller then provides a recommendation.

Subscription license options

As was stated earlier, there are two types of Inventor subscription licenses. These are Standalone (Single-user) license and Network (Multi-user) license. Both types of licenses are available for three possible subscription periods; one month, one year, and three years.

Before your license expires, you will receive periodic renewal reminders 90, 45, 30, and four days before the expiration date. If you purchase your license from the Autodesk store, it will be automatically renewed, and you’ll be billed unless you disable this option through your Autodesk Account.

Standalone (Single-user) license

With a standalone license, a single user can install and use Inventor in a maximum of three devices. These may be a portable PC, a home computer, and a work computer. This license is best for personal use as it cannot be shared with other users. It is also suitable for small organizations with a few employees. Multiple standalone licenses can be purchased and assigned to individual users. To maintain an active status, you need to connect to your standalone license to the internet every 30 days.

Network (Multi-user) license

With a network license, several users on a single virtual private network (VPN) or a local area network (LAN) can have joint access to a single Inventor multi-user license. Since this license can be installed on as many devices as required, it is excellent for large teams of users, especially companies with numerous employees. Note, however, that there is a limit on the number of users that can use the software at once. This limit depends on the number of seats that were purchased. If, for example, you subscribe for a multi-user license and purchase 20 seats, your organization has 40 devices and 25 employees. You can install Inventor on all 40 devices. However, only 20 employees will be able to use the software simultaneously.

The NLM (Network License Manager), installed on one or more servers, controls the designation of access to users on the same network. Whenever a user on the network launches Inventor, the application requests for access from the license server. If a seat is available, the NLM assigns access (one seat) to the requesting device. As soon as the user closes the application, the seat is returned to the NLM and becomes available for reassignment. Network licenses do not require an internet connection to activate or use.

How Much Does Onshape Cost? – Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/onshape-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/onshape-pricing/#comments Mon, 09 Sep 2019 13:18:47 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=37252 There are two fundamental questions that you need to ask whenever you wish to buy a CAD software package. The questions are, can it get the job done? And how much does it cost? As simple as these questions may seem, they can be challenging to answer. This is especially true of course as most CAD software have different packages with different licensing options and varying prices. One such software is Onshape.

In this article, we will be going through all things Onshape pricing. Beginning with its features and capabilities, we will explore the different packages, licensing options, and cost of the application.

Onshape is CAD software system that is used for all things product development. It is focused primarily on MCAD, (Mechanical Computer-aided Design) for industries that produce mechanical machinery, consumer electronics, 3D printing, or even provide medical service.

What Makes Onshape Stand Out?

What makes it stand out is that it’s one of the few CAD packages that are delivered through a SAAS (software as a service) model, over the internet. This eliminates the need for any download or installation, as the software can be accessed through a web browser, on Windows, Mac, OSX, Android and iOS platforms. Also, upgrades for Onshape are released directly to the web interface; hence, maintenance is not required for the software. It is available in English, Korean and Chinese languages.

Onshape Features and Capabilities

The main features of Onshape can be broadly classified into the following. CAD, Data management, Collaboration tools, Security and Audit controls, Analytics and Reporting, and Integration and Partners.

The CAD features allow you to create complex parts and solids, build detailed and structured assemblies, and produce working drawings. You can also import and export data of various formats. In addition to these, the CAD features include standard content libraries.

Using Data management, you can handle release management, version control, advanced flow works, bill of materials, and product data management with ease. Because Onshape does not store data as files, but as virtual documents in databases (cloud-hosted databases), greater monitoring and control is guaranteed.

Collaboration tools allow multiple users to collaborate in real-time with the lead designer. A customer, a vendor, a business associate, or fellow designers can be granted simultaneous, real-time access to a design file. Access may be limited to viewing, commenting, or editing models.

With Onshape, every step of your design process is saved and logged. Whether it is an edit, a modification, or an alteration, the activity is tracked and recorded for review or reversing. You can also regulate access to your project.

Going through all the features mentioned above, it is evident that Onshape is very capable of getting the job done. Having ascertained its capability, we can now proceed to the actual Onshape pricing.

Onshape Plans

You always have access to the most recent version of the software via web, for the length of your subscription.

The single-user license gives access to only one user. It is ideal for individuals and small companies with only a few employees. This license is available for Onshape Professional and Onshape Standard and can be purchased from either the official site or from authorized resellers.

The enterprise license is best for large companies with numerous employees. Understandably, it is available for only Onshape Enterprise. Because the demands for this license type varies by customer, you’ll have to contact the sales team to purchase it. Unlike traditional offline software which requires dedicated servers and network infrastructure to manage enterprise licenses, Onshape enterprise licenses can be managed over the internet.

You can upgrade from free to Standard, and from Standard to Professional, in the middle of your billing period. If you do this, you will be refunded your unused time for the lower version and be simultaneously charged for the higher version. Your new subscription period (one year) begins on the day of the upgrade. It is also possible to cancel or downgrade your subscription in the middle of your billing period. In this case, however, you will not receive a refund but will continue to use the software till the end of the year (since you have already paid for it), after which you will be downgraded.

How Much Does SketchUp Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/sketchup-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/sketchup-pricing/#comments Mon, 05 Aug 2019 14:34:20 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=36645 SketchUp is a 3D design and modeling CAD software by Trimble. It is used in a wide range of fields including mechanical engineering, landscaping, video game design, architecture, and civil engineering. SketchUp allows you to design, visualize, analyze, document, collaborate, and share models. All these make the software program the preferred choice of many students, hobbyists, and professionals. Before also making it your preferred choice, there is another factor which you must take into consideration. This factor is cost.

Because there are various SketchUp products and license types, the question – “How much does SketchUp cost?“, does not have a straightforward answer. This article covers everything SketchUp cost. We will be exploring the different SketchUp products, their licensing options, where to purchase them, and any alternatives they have.

SketchUp products

SketchUp has a lineup of products that differ by level of functionality. This is to ensure that there is something for both hobbyists and professionals alike. We must know what each of these products offers before we explore their cost. The following are the different SketchUp products in ascending order of capability.

SketchUp Shop

This is a subscription-based, web version of SketchUp that can be accessed through web browsers. It comes with limited functionality but still allows you to create, edit, and view models; import and export data; and collaborate online, anywhere, and on any device. All you need are a Trimble ID, an internet connection, and a compatible browser. Although SketchUp Shop can be used on any device, it works best on a laptop or desktop computer. A SketchUp Shop subscription is independent of any other SketchUp product or plan.

SketchUp Pro

SketchUp Pro comes next in terms of functionality. Unlike SketchUp Shop, it is a desktop version and has to be downloaded and installed on a desktop computer or laptop. In addition to the features of SketchUp Shop, SketchUp Pro allows users to carry out to 2D documentation and advanced visualization such as VR (Virtual Reality) model viewing. You can also geo-locate models, export animation videos, and produce construction drawings.

SketchUp Studio

This is an advanced version of SketchUp Pro that has some additional industry-specific features for the architecture and construction industry. It has an easy-to-use user interface, as well as intuitive tools that help you design your building easily. SketchUp Studio’s advanced features allow you to design energy-efficient buildings. You can analyze HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), energy use, daylighting, and occupants thermal comfort, before you build. This product is a package that includes SketchUp Pro, Sefaira (a building energy analysis program), VR/AR (Augmented Reality) apps, collaboration tools, and cloud storage.

SketchUp license options

SketchUp icon, License options

Trimble offers several license types for SketchUp. These licenses are classified according to the period of use, and number of users. They are as follows.

Subscription license

A subscription license allows you to use SketchUp for one year. It is best when you intend to use the software short-term. When you subscribe, you pay upfront for the full term (one year) of your subscription. Currently, only annual subscriptions are available. Upon expiration, your license automatically renews if you have activated auto-renewal; otherwise, your access to the product ends. Subscription licenses are available for SketchUp Shop, SketchUp Pro, and SketchUp Studio. They can be used offline but have to be connected to the internet every 28 days to maintain the license.

Classic (perpetual) license

Also known as SketchUp Pro classic, this license is only available for SketchUp Pro. A classic license is a perpetual license that provides lifetime access to SketchUp Pro. However, if you purchase a classic license for SketchUp 2019, this does not automatically grant you access to SketchUp 2020. To upgrade, you need to contact your reseller. To make things easier for owners of this license, the license comes with an optional upgrade, maintenance, and support plan to which you can subscribe. Subscribers to this plan can have their classic licenses conveniently upgraded to a more recent version.

Single user license

Both subscription and classic licenses are available as single-user Licences. A single-user license is allotted to one individual and can only be used by the user. That person can install the license on any two computers with which they work. For example, a work desktop computer and a laptop. These licenses can either be bought from the SketchUp store or an official reseller.

Network license

A Sketchup network license is more suited for small companies with at least ten employees. Using this license, SketchUp can be installed on as many devices as possible but can only be simultaneously used on as many seats as are available in the purchase agreement. For example, if you purchase a network license with 20 seats, and your company has 40 computers, you can install it on all 40 computers, but only a maximum of 20 people can use the software at any given time. A computer making use of a network license has to be connected to the internet. This is because this license is stored in the clouds.

For large companies with at least 200 employees, Trimble offers Enterprise licenses with a minimum of 200 Seats. Because network and enterprise licenses are customer-specific, you have to contact the SketchUp Pro sales team to purchase them. These licenses are available as both subscription and perpetual options.

Upgrade, maintenance, and support (UMS)

This is an optional, subscription-based plan for owners of SketchUp Pro classic (perpetual) licenses. This plan gives you access to not only updates and support, but most importantly, to upgrades. As soon as the latest version of SketchUp Pro is available, subscribers to the UMS plan receive an email containing new license information. They can now proceed to download, install, authorize, and use the latest version. UMS is available to both single-user and network classic licenses. The plan is automatically added and billed to your first time purchase. This means that for the first year of your classic license purchase, you are automatically subscribed to the plan. After this, you can either renew your subscription to the upgrade, maintenance, and support plan or cancel it. It is important to note that this plan is an independent and optional subscription for classic licenses only.

SketchUp price

As with many other CAD software, while you can purchase single-user licenses by yourself from the SketchUp store or an official reseller, you have to contact the SketchUp sales team to inquire about the price of or purchase network licenses. The table below contains the process of single-user licenses for SketchUp products. All prices are in US Dollars.

How Much Does Revit Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/revit-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/revit-pricing/#comments Tue, 09 Jul 2019 09:59:15 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=36097 Two major questions always come to mind when you are considering procuring a software package: Can it get the job done? And how much does it cost? These questions also apply to a software package as popular as Revit. Revit is a BIM (Building Information and Modeling) software package by Autodesk that can be described as a complete package for all things construction, design, and modeling. This application allows architects, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing engineers), structural engineers, and landscape experts to design and model structures in 3D, annotate in 2D, and study structures’ life cycles with 4D features.

Since the software’s ability to get the job done is evident in its millions of users, the next question is how much does Revit cost? In this article we will be discussing everything Revit pricing; from how and where to get the software, to the purchasing options available, to cost. This pricing review was made using the latest Revit version, Revit 2020.

How and Where to Get Revit

Out with the Old: Revit’s Old Licensing Format

On January 31st, 2016, Autodesk stopped selling perpetual licenses for all their software packages and switched to subscription licenses. Revit is available in both short-term and long-term options. The product is available in monthly, annual, and 3-year period subscriptions. While monthly subscriptions are best suited for project-based work or short-term projects, annual and 3-year options are cost-effective long-term options. Since then, Autodesk has made a few additional changes to the subscription licenses.

Previously, there were two major subscriptions licensing options for Revit: Single-user (Standalone license) and Multi-user (Network license). With single-user licenses, a single user could install and use Revit in up to three devices, while organizations whose employees exceeded three had to purchase additional licenses. On the other hand, a multi-user access subscription allowed multiple users on a single local area network (LAN) or a virtual private network (VPN) to have joint access to a single Revit network license. This license was perfect for teams of users as Revit could be installed on as many devices as possible. The single-user license could be bought from either an authorized reseller or from the Autodesk online store, while multi-user licenses could be only be bought from authorized resellers.

In with the New: Revit’s New Subscription Model

This is no longer the case because, starting August 7, 2022, Autodesk stopped selling new subscription licenses with multi-user access. The company retired these licenses on February 7, 2023, meaning they cannot be renewed after this date. Additionally, Autodesk retired the earlier subscription concept in which licenses were based on serial numbers. Moving forward, the subscription will be assigned to named users through the admins’ Autodesk accounts.

Nonetheless, customers looking to purchase a license that can support multiple users are still covered. Autodesk offers the Premium and Enterprise licenses for this exact purpose. The Single-user license has also been renamed the Standard license. Like its predecessor, the Standard license includes three packages that are based on the length of the subscription period: monthly, annual, and every three months.

Given the changes, you might be wondering where you can get a Revit subscription. We will have you know that Autodesk has not altered its earlier model. Standard licenses can be purchased from Autodesk online store. Similarly, to purchase Premium and Enterprise licenses, you must contact Autodesk’s representatives or authorized resellers.

Where to purchase Revit also depends on the subscription term length you require. Monthly subscriptions are only available on the Autodesk store. Annual and 3-year subscriptions, on the other hand, are available for purchase through both resellers and the Autodesk store.

How to Renew Your Revit Subscription

Prior to the expiration of your license, Autodesk will send your contract manager (reseller or Autodesk sales representative) renewal notifications and instructions 90, 45, 30, and 4 days before the expiration date. This reminders help them initiate the manual renewal process as Revit software purchased via a reseller or an Autodesk sales representative is not renewed automatically. Nonetheless, note that all subscriptions purchased through the Autodesk online store are automatically renewed and you’ll be billed automatically unless you turn off this option in your Autodesk account. It is also possible to cancel a subscription before it expires. Canceled or expired subscriptions cannot be restarted. You have to buy a new subscription to continue access. All subscription plans come with a lineup of benefits.

Revit’s Subscription Licensing Plans

Revit subscriptions are available as four major types of licenses: Standard (standalone), Premium, Enterprise, and Education.

1. Standard Plan

Every Revit subscription you purchase on the Autodesk store, through an Autodesk representative, or through a reseller includes the Standard plan. You can elect to purchase the monthly, annual, or 3-year plan.

Based on the newly introduced changes, the Standard plan is based on usage by user name rather than by serial number. In this regard, you must specify the number of users (seats) beforehand during the purchase. For instance, if your team comprises five users, you will have to purchase five seats under the Standard license. You can even purchase as many as 20, 30, or 50 seats, but Autodesk will not give you a discount on your bulk purchase. To purchase and manage your purchases, you must have an Autodesk account.

The Standard license includes the following benefits:

  • All the functionalities of Revit
  • Two-step verification
  • Aggregate usage reports by product, frequency, and version
  • Live support during local weekday working hours (8×5)
  • Ability to invite, add, and assign users to a Revit product
  • User organization into groups to quickly assign the same products to many users simultaneously
  • Fewer user management tools compared to Premium and Enterprise plans

2. Premium Plan

The Premium plan is a prepaid subscription available on either a 1-year or 3-year term. This plan is suited for organizations that need to purchase more than 10 Revit seats. According to Autodesk, this plan is designed for small and medium-sized organizations that manage 50 or more subscriptions. It facilitates more efficient user management by including the single sign-on (SSO) tool that enables users to access their accounts using company credentials. In addition, it offers a usage reporting API that facilitates data transfer between different software.

This plan costs about $300 (suggested retail price) per Revit subscription. You can upgrade anytime from the Standard plan or at subscription renewal by contacting an Autodesk representative or an authorized reseller. However, as this is a prepaid plan, you have to wait for your subscription to expire in order to downgrade to the standard plan.

The additional price offers the following benefits:

  • All the functionalities of Revit
  • Usage reporting by user, product, frequency, and version
  • Single sign-on
  • Directory sync: This tool connects your company’s directory with Autodesk’s user management platform
  • Automated addition of users upon first sign-in
  • API access that enables you to integrate usage data with third-party software
  • 24/7 support

3. Enterprise Plan

The Enterprise plan is designed for large customers that enter into an Enterprise Business Agreement (EBA) with Autodesk. This plan offers several benefits, including:

  • Customization, e.g., inputting metadata that is relevant to your business to enrich reports
  • Control over admin rights, i.e., ability to restrict product downloads to admins only
  • Autodesk’s support on individual projects
  • Autodesk’s assistance in the development of procedures, workflows, and overall BIM implementation
  • Ability to work with an assigned Customer Success Manager (CSM) to build, implement, and capture value from the customer success plan

4. Education Plan

The Education license is reserved for eligible students and educators. It gives these users free one-year educational access to the Revit desktop software and cloud services through the Autodesk Education Community. This license is renewable, provided you remain eligible. Eligibility is anchored in whether a person is an employee or independent contractor working for a qualified educational institution or a person enrolled as a student in a qualified educational institution.

There are two types of education licenses: those meant for individual students and those meant for an entire class/lab. The former license provides access to about 45 Autodesk products, including Revit, while the latter offers access to 55 Autodesk products, including Revit.

Autodesk offers a number of discounts and freebies on Revit. Some of them are as follows.

1. Revit Education License

You can get a free version of Revit for students, teachers, and educational institutions, through an education license. As stated earlier, the education plan is valid for one year and can be renewed provided you are still eligible. This version is solely for the purposes of research, training, development, and learning. It must not be used for professional or commercial purposes.

2. Revit Free Trial

Autodesk allows users to enjoy the full version of Revit for free, over a period of 30 days. After this period users are expected to decide whether to either subscribe or discontinue usage.

3. Revit’s 10% Off on Renewals

Autodesk gives existing subscribers a special renewal pricing that is 10% less than what they would ordinarily pay for a new subscription. However, this discount only applies if you renew before the subscription expires and is applicable to only the annual and three-year plans.

Revit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. Can I buy Revit without a subscription? No. Autodesk moved from a perpetual licensing model, which would allow you to purchase Revit without a subscription, to a subscription model. Under this model, you have to renew your license after every month, year, or three years, depending on the term you choose.
  2. Can I renew my expired Revit license? No. An expired license cannot be reactivated or restarted. In that regard, you have to purchase a new subscription license. You can purchase a new license through Autodesk’s online store or via an authorized reseller.
  3. How can I convert Revit trial version to paid subscription? As trial licenses cannot be extended or renewed, you have to purchase a paid subscription. To convert your Revit trial to a subscription, follow this procedure:
    1. Open your trial software and click ‘Subscribe Now.’ This will open the Autodesk Account page where you will be prompted to log in.
    2. Log in to your Autodesk account to purchase the license plan that best suits your needs. In rare cases, however, purchasing via your account may not be possible. In such an instance, you will have to go through a reseller.
    3. Once you have made the purchase, your trial license will automatically switch to a subscription.
  4. Will my Revit software update automatically if I choose long-term plans? Yes. You will receive automatic Revit updates throughout your contract term. This applies to both short-term (monthly) and long-term (1 year and 3 year) plans.

Are There Alternatives to Revit?

Having gone through the pricing of Revit, it’s reasonable to want to consider alternative products.

1. Revit LT

Revit LT is an economical and cost-effective BIM software that is used to produce 3D architectural designs and basic documentation. Generally, Revit LT is designed for BIM and project managers, contractors, consultants, engineers, architects, and design and engineering professionals in solo practice or those working for and in small organizations. It is also ideal for students and educators.

Compared to Revit, Revit LT is cheaper. In addition, it is a more simplified BIM solution. This means Revit LT provides basic structural modeling, data management, and interoperability tools. Additionally, its visualization and presentation features are more rudimentary than what Revit offers.

Revit LT lacks MEP modeling capabilities (which are present in Revit), meaning it cannot be used to design HVAC duct systems, mechanical equipment, piping and plumbing systems, electrical and lighting systems, as well as fabrication of parts. Moreover, it cannot be used for construction modeling, simulation, or analysis. If you want a program that unlocks these and more features, then you have to purchase another software; you could use Revit or the other products on this list.

2. AutoCAD Revit LT Suite

AutoCAD Revit LT Suite pairs Revit LT and AutoCAD LT together in suite. It thus provides professional grade CAD and BIM tools within a single interface. The suite is used to design, document, visualise, and deliver both engineering and architectural projects for teams or individuals working in the BIM and CAD spaces.

3. Vectorworks Architect

Vectorworks Architect is one of several products under the Vectorworks stable. Developed and sold by Vectorworks, Inc., a subsidiary of the Nemetschek Group, Vectorworks Architect is a BIM software suited for the various design and construction phases, including the pre-design phase, schematic design development, detailed development, and documentation.

In addition, Vectorworks Architect promotes creative expression by allowing you to sketch, model, and document all your ideas using the built-in 2D drafting and 3D modeling tools. Upon completing the modeling phase, you can visualize your creation thanks to the software’s integrated 3D modeling engine powered by SIEMENS Parasolid.

What’s more, this solution enables you to quantify and analyze information, run ‘what if’ scenarios, automate schedules, calculate costs, maximize and optimize every design element, and analyze energy efficiency. In addition, its import/export capabilities allow you to import different file types from myriad 3D modeling software.

As we have detailed in our Vectorworks vs. Revit article, there are several differences between Vectorworks and Revit. For instance, Vectorworks Architect is available via a perpetual license or a subscription, while Revit users can only purchase a subscription plan. Additionally, unlike Revit, Vectorworks Architect has a network license and a separate maintenance charge for the perpetual license. That said, Vectorworks, Inc. will follow in Autodesk’s footsteps as it intends to stop selling perpetual starting January 1, 2023. The Vectorworks subscription license is cheaper than Revit.

4. ArchiCAD

ArchiCAD is a popular BIM CAD software developed by the Hungarian company Graphisoft. This solution is the first execution of BIM in the CAD industry and is mainly designed for architectural applications. For this reason, it is primarily used by interior designers, drafters, and architects who want to create 2D and 3D designs.

The software offers a myriad of design, visualization and rendering, collaboration, and data management tools. Its approach to the design process is simple as it enables you to easily incorporate parts such as windows, doors, walls, slabs, and others. Moreover, ArchiCAD offers visualization and rendering tools that help designers and architects transform their 3D models into photo-realistic videos and pictures.

And being a BIM software, ArchiCAD promotes collaboration via the cloud. For example, members of a large team can edit a drawing or model, with the software automatically synchronizing the changes in the cloud. This enables every user to access only the updated copy of the drawing/model.

As detailed in our ArchiCAD vs. Revit comparison article, both of these applications differ greatly. For instance, ArchiCAD has both a Windows and macOS version, while Revit is only compatible with the Windows platform. Furthermore, Revit can also be used by MEP engineers in addition to architects and designers, while ArchiCAD can only be used by architects and designers. Finally, ArchiCAD is cheaper than Revit – ArchiCAD’s pricing is summarized in the table below.

5. BricsCAD BIM

There are different BricsCAD products, including BricsCAD Shape (a free 3D modeler), BricsCAD BIM (a BIM solution for designers, structural engineers, and architects), BricsCAD Mechanical (for mechanical engineers), and BricsCAD 24/7 (a cloud-based collaboration tool). Of this, and as the name suggests, BricsCAD BIM is Revit’s alternative.

BricsCAD BIM offers start-to-finish (design-to-documentation) tools that improve the BIM workflow. In fact, the software uses machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence to automate tasks such as BIM data manipulation, documentation, and detailing. Its intuitive direct modeling tool enables you to sculpt a model in a way that ensures it remains responsive and light. In addition, the solution acts as an easy path for CAD users to enter into the BIM space without having to learn about the traditional BIM system. Simply put, BricsCAD BIM provides design modeling, documentation, and BIM capabilities in a DWG-based system.

The solution lets you visualize your design at every step of your BIM workflow. This is thanks to real-time rendering using integrated tools such as Escape, Twinmotion, and Lumion.

When it comes to pricing and licenses, BricsCAD BIM does not have a monthly subscription plan. Instead, its subscription plans cover either a one-year or three-year term. The existence of one-year and three-year subscription plans means BricsCAD BIM operates somewhat similarly to Revit. Nonetheless, BricsCAD BIM is cheaper.

The table below summarizes the pricing information of the various Revit alternatives.

Solid Edge License Options and Maintenance Agreement

Solid Edge License Options

This is where it starts to get a bit tricky. There are several license options which apply to every Solid Edge package. For ease of understanding, we have broadly categorized them into three: device-based license options, special licenses, and period-based license options. In addition, SIEMENS PLM offers value-based licensing through a token-based flexible license.

Solid Edge Device-based License Options

There are three Solid Edge device-based license options:

1. Node-locked (Standalone) License

A node-locked license is a single-seat license that allows a single user to load and use Solid Edge on a single machine. This license is locked to a specific machine using a number known as  the SE CID (Solid Edge Composite Host ID), for older versions of Solid Edge, or COMPOSITE2, for newer versions of the software (post 2020). The number is generated automatically by the Solid Edge Utility application.  You need to input this number along with an identifiable name of the computer during the product activation phase to activate the standalone license. Thus, it is important to take note of the ID.

2. Cloud-Enabled License

The cloud-enabled license works similarly to the node-locked license, albeit with one significant difference. It is locked to a person, via their WebKey username and password, rather than the machine name and SE CID/COMPOSITE2 number. (WebKey is Siemens’ user authentication system.)

As such, the cloud-enabled license offers more flexibility than the node-locked license, as it can be used on more than one machine. It also enables users to access and use the Solid Edge software from different locations. However, as detailed below, the cloud-enabled license does not cover usage across a geographical border. It is only meant for use within the country of registration. Therefore, if you need to use Solid Edge in another country, you must possess a special license known as a travel license.

3. Floating License

A floating license allows a limited amount of multiple users to use the software simultaneously on a network. This license allows for greater flexibility as it can be installed on as many computers as needed, provided the number of simultaneous users does not exceed the number stipulated in the license configuration (number of purchased seats). Floating licenses are ideal for companies with many employees.

Solid Edge Special Licenses

In addition to the node-locked and floating licenses, Siemens PLM also offers special licenses: travel and home use licenses. These licenses can only be purchased as an addition to the node-locked or floating license.

1. Solid Edge Home-use License

The home-use license allows node-locked or floating licenses purchased and installed on an employer’s computer, to be used at home by an employee on a PC. Home use licenses expire after 6 months and have to be renewed. This prevents a situation where a former employee continues to use an employer’s license even after they no longer work together. That said, the ability to renew the Solid Edge home-use license is contingent on having a valid maintenance contract.

2. Solid-Edge Travel License

Users can apply for a travel license for up to 30 days from the date of issue per year. It also entitles users to 30 days per-license of Solid Edge in-maintenance on their accounts. This license allows them to temporarily use Solid Edge on a different machine off-site. The 30-day allowance resets after 12 months.

Solid Edge Period-based License Options

There are two main Solid Edge license options by period: subscription license and perpetual licenses.

1. Subscription License

The subscription license is a period based option that allows you to use Solid Edge for a limited period of time. This option is best when you are on a budget or when you have the end of your project in sight. Subscriptions are available as monthly or yearly plans with yearly plans being more expensive than monthly plans. These plans are renewed automatically but you can cancel at any time. All subscription plans are single-seat and node-locked. To purchase a Solid Edge subscription license, simply head to the software’s online store.

Do not that all subscription plans include the Xcelerator Share, a next-generation collaboration tool that provides the following capabilities:

  • E-mail address based sharing
  • Secure, central storage
  • Optional data management tools
  • Augmented reality
  • Desktop file syncing
  • Permission-based project sharing
  • Browser-based access on any device or OS
  • Task management (ability to set due dates, priority files, and reference files)
  • Multi-user overwrite protection and more

2. Perpetual License

As the name implies, payment for this license is made once after which you can use the application indefinitely. However, the license is attached to the Solid Edge version purchased. You can always upgrade to a newer version for a fee. Perpetual licenses may be single-seat (node-locked) or floating.

There are many factors to consider when going for a perpetual license; what industry do you work in? What does your company do? Do you require Solid Edge for private use? Do you want a node-locked or floating license? How many users? Would you like to add travel and home use licenses? Because of this, Siemens PLM doesn’t fix any definite price on perpetual licenses. The price of these licenses varies with the factors earlier listed. Price also varies by country. To purchase a perpetual license, you’ll need to contact Siemens PLM or any authorized reseller and provide your details and preferences. You’ll then receive a quote from them on the plan that best suits you.

Solid Edge Flexible Licensing

Solid Edge flexible licensing functions similarly to AutoCAD Flex in that it is based on the purchase of tokens. The tokens then allow you to add specific capabilities to the Solid Edge software through add ons. These add ons include PCB Collaboration, Electric Routing, Point Cloud Visualization, Simulation, Advanced PMI (Product and Manufacturing Information), and more.

Solid Edge Maintenance Contract

In addition to the various license options above, Siemens PLM recommends that users enter the Solid Edge Maintenance, Enhancements, and Support (ME&S) contract to maximize the value of their software investments. Renewed annually, the ME&S agreement offers the following benefits:

  • Lower software upgrade costs for major new releases
  • Timely updates of software improvements and patches
  • 24/7 technical support, including telephone support and web-based technical support resources and documentation
  • Ability to purchase the home-use and travel licenses

Solid Edge Pricing

Now that we’ve understood the different Solid Edge packages and their license options, let us explore the pricing. We can only explore subscription licenses as prices of perpetual licenses differ according to your requirements. The table below shows Solid Edge packages and their prices in $USD. These prices were sourced from the official Siemens PLM Solid Edge store.

How Much Does DraftSight Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/draftsight-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/draftsight-pricing/#comments Tue, 04 Jun 2019 11:26:45 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=35220 DraftSight is a professional 2D and 3D CAD software developed by Dassault Systemes, the same company responsible for giving the design and construction industry Solidworks. The program is available for download on either DraftSight.com or on the Dassault Systemes website. Although primarily known for its flagship product – Solidworks – Dassault Systemes had found through customer interviews that there was a demand for programs compatible with the DWG file format. As such, the software can be used to create and edit 2D technical and construction drawings, handle .dwg and .dxf files and write or print up PDF documents.

As with any top-of-the-line CAD software however, it’s important to many users that pricing options are factored in the purchase of any new program. It’s even more pertinent to look into the pricing of DraftSight seeing as it has only recently opted out of releasing free versions of its software online; DraftSight 2019 is now entirely subscription based and so even old users of the program will have to readjust.

To look at this from all angles, we’ve compiled all the information we could find of DraftSight 2019’s pricing and licensing policies.

DraftSight License Options and Packages

Dassault Systemes tries to be as transparent and accessible as it can with DraftSights price options. The full price list for the different DraftSight packages is publicly viewable online, on the company’s official website.

There are four main available DraftSight packages that a user can purchase from Dassault Systemes: DraftSight Standard, DraftSight Professional, DraftSight Premium, and DraftSight Enterprise. There are also two specialized packages: DraftSight Enterprise Plus, and DraftSight 2019 Prosumer.

DraftSight Standard

This is the most basic package for DraftSight. It has all of the essential features of the program and is suitable for 2D CAD drafters with an easy and straight-forward user interface and all the fundamental digital tools needed for 2D drawing.

The program is designed for individual users, students and teachers/educators, and casual hobbyists. This version of the software runs on Windows but has a beta version that can run on Mac and Linux. It can be purchased from the DraftSight website with a 12-month subscription.

DraftSight Professional

This is the recommended and most popular package for DraftSight. It’s labeled as the advanced 2D CAD version of the program with optimized features and functionality, and a more sophisticated user interface than the Standard version of DraftSight.

The package is intended for companies, firms, and independent professionals. DraftSight Professional runs on Windows and can be purchased from the DraftSight website as a 12-month subscription.

The only available trial version for DraftSight is that of DraftSight Professional.

DraftSight Premium

DraftSight Premium is the most affordable package that has 3D CAD capabilities. It can be used for basic drafting and modeling, as most 2D/3D software can, but can also be utilized for product prototyping, manufacturing, 3D printing, and CNC processes.

This package is suitable for individuals, product and furniture designers, makers and hobbyists, manufacturers, design and construction professionals, and companies. DraftSight Premium only runs on Windows and can be purchased and downloaded from the DraftSight website as a 12-month subscription.

DraftSight Enterprise and Enterprise Plus

DraftSight Enterprise is intended for large groups or organizations looking to use DraftSight. As such, it is is best purchased by large teams from a company or teams working from different sites. The package includes comprehensive technical support, installation, and network licenses. The Plus variation of DraftSight Enterprise has all of what was mentioned plus additional 3D capabilities.

DraftSight Premium only runs on Windows and has a minimum purchase amount of 2 licenses. This version of the software can only by purchases off of resellers and official vendors, although a quote can be requested on the DraftSight website.

Buyers can choose to opt for a 12-month subscription or a perpetual license with paid scheduled maintenance upgrades every 12 months.

DraftSight Prosumer

DraftSight Prosumer is a paid subscription to phone and email technical support for DraftSight Standard, Professional, and Premium users. The tech support can assist with installation, license activation, program configuration, and software usage. This can be purchased from the DraftSight website and comes in 3-month and 12-month subscriptions.

What about License management?

DraftSight icon, license management

DraftSight licenses are relatively standard. The licenses for the packages discussed come in 12-month subscriptions and are non-transferable and non-exclusive. Previous iterations of DraftSight (DraftSight 2018 and older) used to come with free versions of the program, but since they’re changing the business model to a subscription-based one for DraftSight 2019, all free versions of the program will only be usable until December 21, 2019. Each package has its own limits to the licenses. For DraftSight Standard, Professional, and Premium, the program can be installed and licensed on multiple devices but can only have one active at a time. Technical support for installation and activation issues can be provided through online or e-mail responses only. For DraftSight Enterprise, the number of active users is limited to the agreed upon authorized number of concurrent users decide upon during purchase. The users for this are also limited by geography and location; that is, if a network user uses it outside of the jurisdiction of the license, the program will not work.

All licenses and programs are downloaded, sent, and activated online and through e-mail.

Is there a perpetual license option?

Dassault Systemes seems to be shifting to a more subscription-based business model, but they still do offer perpetual licenses to DraftSight users who avail of the DraftSight Enterprise and Enterprise Plus packages. That is, there will be no need to pay an annual subscription fee, but buyers can always opt to pay for optional maintenance and an annual upgrade.

DraftSight Pricing – The Full Breakdown

As already discussed, there are different packages for DraftSight that one has to consider before purchasing. Before buying, it is pertinent to consider all the needs of your company and group and figure out which package works best.

How Much Does Vectorworks Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/vectorworks-pricing/ Sat, 18 May 2019 14:18:26 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=34880 Vectorworks is a multifaceted rendering, 2D drafting, 3D modeling, and fully-integrated BIM (Building Information Modeling) application for architectural, landscape, and entertainment designs. The software is created and sold by an eponymous developer known as Vectorworks, Inc. Thanks to its capability to deliver a flexible and collaborative design process, Vectorworks is frequently selected by industry professionals. However, alongside capability, another important factor that should be considered when selecting a CAD software is cost and pricing. Vectorworks has an impressive number of products which all have different prices. In this article, we will be explaining the pricing of the various products, how to purchase them, where to purchase them, their licensing options, and many more.

For most people looking to purchase Vectorworks, the official Vectorworks website of the application is the first port of call. However, going through the website (if you are located outside the United States), you would discover that there is hardly any information on how much Vectorworks products cost or where to buy them. This is because, in international markets, Vectorworks can only be purchased through authorized official resellers, and for good reason. Considering the number of Vectorworks packages available, Vectorworks Inc. believes that before buying a package, you should have a personal discussion with the reseller about your industry, your business, what you intend to do with Vectorworks, and your budget. The reseller may also provide information on license or subscription purchase.

Using all this information, the reseller then recommends the most suitable Vectorworks product and license option to you. Another advantage of purchasing from official resellers is the option to buy in local currency. In addition to this, a local official reseller is available to provide you with customer service if you experience any issues with your application. Note that not all resellers are officially recognized by Vectorworks. To find official resellers near you, you can either go to the Vectorworks website’s “find a reseller” page or check out their recommended online resellers.

Vectorworks Products

Vectorworks icon with Vectorworks product names

Before proceeding to explore their cost, it’s important for us to know the different Vectorworks products. The following are some of these products.

1. Vectorworks Architect

Vectorworks Architect is a BIM solution for all design phases, from pre-design and schematic design development to detailed design development and construction documentation. This tool allows architects to enjoy the benefits of BIM within a software environment that promotes creative expression. With Vectorworks Architect, for example, you can freely sketch your ideas and subsequently convert them into models and documentation with a spate of precision drafting capabilities and ‘the most flexible’ 3D modeling engine powered by SIEMENS Parasolid.

Additionally, and in keeping up with the needs of BIM, which is anchored in information, Vectorworks Architect makes quantification and analysis of information easy, starting from the schematic design phase. Specifically, it allows you to analyze energy efficiency, calculate costs, automate schedules, and run “what if” scenarios, enabling them to optimize and maximize all the design elements.

The program facilitates collaboration. It achieves this by supporting the export and import of files from the likes of Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Cinema4D, and Photoshop. It also supports openBIM, a collaborative process, and Industry Foundational Classes (IFC), a data format that facilitates the lossless exchange of information models.

Vectorworks Architect also enables you to produce line drawings and 3D presentations. It also supports myriad technologies, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), photogrammetry, 360-degree panorama, and point cloud.

2. Vectorworks Landmark

Vectorworks Landmark is a BIM solution billed as the ultimate product for landscape design. It links all drawings, models, details, and schedules. This product, therefore, makes it easy for you to easily make universal changes; a change made in one of these areas is reflected everywhere, meaning users do not spend a lot of time manually modifying the different parts of the drawing.

Furthermore, it automatically generates schedules and reports. It also calculates construction costs, material takeoffs, and terrain analysis for drainage, slope, and cuts/fills. Like Vectorworks Architect, Vectorworks Landmark facilitates collaboration thanks to its support for IFC and openBIM. It also supports direct links with software such as Cinema4D, Rhino, Photoshop, Lumion, Revit, SketchUp, and AutoCAD.

The Vectorworks Landmark product is specifically designed for the following applications:

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) and planning
  • Site design and reporting
  • Irrigation
  • Planting, hardscapes, and general landscape architecture
  • Creative landscape modeling
  • Graphics and presentation

3. Vectorworks Spotlight

Vectorworks Spotlight is designed for the entertainment industry. It is meant for anyone undertaking exhibit, event, film, scenic, or lighting design. Thanks to its precision drafting capabilities, Vectorworks Spotlight allows you to sketch your design ideas. Subsequently, powered by SIEMENS Parasolid, you can undertake 3D modeling. The software further supports documentation.

You can rely on the software’s huge Resource Library throughout the design and modeling phases. This repository contains scenic, video, audio, lighting, and rigging manufacturer content.

Vectorworks Spotlight allows you to import design and technical production information from anywhere. In addition, its project-sharing capabilities enable team members to work on the same file concurrently. They can then communicate through the mobile viewing tool and share ideas via Vectorworks Cloud Services.

Furthermore, you can include the Vectorworks Braceworks Add-on, which adds analysis capabilities. This enables rigging, production, and rigging professionals to analyze the performance of temporary structures under different loads, such as lights, speakers, and more. Finally, you can also add Vectorworks Vision to Spotlight. This integration allows you to design creatively and efficiently in addition to affording you the power to virtually visualize your shows.

Generally, Vectorworks Spotlight is used for:

  • Precision drawing
  • Creative modeling
  • Analysis with Braceworks
  • Graphics and presentation
  • Visualization with Vision
  • Reporting and documentation

4. Vectorworks Fundamentals

Vectorworks Fundamentals is a design, modeling, and documentation software. You can use the software’s precision drafting tools to freely sketch 2D designs; utilizing SIEMENS Parasolid, a flexible 3D modeling engine, you can also undertake 3D modeling. Additionally, Vectorworks Fundamentals contains tools that increase the efficiency of your workflow. For instance, it automatically generates reports from your designs. It allows you to run “what if” scenarios, automate schedules, and calculate the costs of different aspects of the actual design project. This way, the software allows you to maximize each design element.

Like all other Vectorworks products, Vectorworks Fundamentals offers import and export capabilities. It also supports other CAD and design software, including AutoCAD, Rhino, Photoshop, and Cinema 4D. And to top these capabilities off, this application allows you to solve specific design problems through customization. You can use a robust Application Programming Interface (API) and software development kit (SDK) to add extra functionalities. You can also create Python scripts to automate routine tasks or create custom tools.

Designing and modeling are one thing. However, to show these designs and models to clients or partners, you must create a presentation. For this reason, Vectorworks Fundamentals offers a suite of illustration and rendering tools (in addition to drawing tools) that allow you to generate outstanding 3D presentations.

Vectorworks Fundamentals is used for design processes that include:

  • Precision drawing
  • Illustration
  • Surface and solids modeling
  • Rendering
  • Customization
  • Reporting

5. Vectorworks Design Suite

Also referred to as Vectorworks Designer by some resellers, the Vectorworks Design Suite combines the capabilities of the Architect, Fundamentals, Spotlight, and Landmark products in a single software interface. It, therefore, comes in handy in cross-disciplinary projects that require you and other members of your team to make use of the disparate features and capabilities of the different Vectorworks products.

As a suite of different products, Vectorworks Design Suite promotes cost savings. For instance, the price tag of a single-seat perpetual license for the product (with maintenance) costs $5,246.00 (refer to the table below), while the monthly subscription costs $198.00. In comparison, the cumulative cost of the single-seat perpetual licenses for Architect, Fundamentals, Spotlight, and Landmark products will set you back $14,884.00. If you opt for the monthly subscription mode, you will have to fork out $567.00 every month. Against this backdrop, Vectorworks Design Suite is a cheaper but more powerful alternative.

6. Vectorworks Vision

Vectorworks Vision is a Previz software that allows you to share your design vision. (Previz is a web-based platform that enables creative teams to share and publish their 3D models and experiences for the purpose of review.) This tool supports seamless integration with Vectorworks Spotlight, allowing you to visualize the designs you have created in Spotlight in 3D renders that are viewable in Vision.

With Vectorworks Vision, you can previsualize what your designed rig can do. It offers numerous customizable and comprehensive fixtures, including colors, shutters, lenses, and gobos. It is these features that make the previsualization of the 3D renders a breeze. In addition to the previsualization, Vision allows you to cue your show. It lets you work with a console of your choice, helping you preprogram your show even before you can physically construct the stage.

7. Braceworks

Braceworks is an add-on module for Vectorworks Spotlight and Vectorworks Design Suite. It is an analytics tool that ensures the show proceeds safely. Braceworks achieves this by enabling design, production, and rigging professionals to assess the performance and structural capabilities of temporary rigs and platforms under load. Specifically, the module conducts static and finite element modeling (FEM) analyses as well as the analysis of complete 3D structural systems. In this way, it helps ensure safety and compliance with engineering standards and codes such as Eurocodes.

Developed in partnership with DeerSoft GmbH, Braceworks helps professionals to produce load and structure calculations for sign-off by structural engineers. Along with the analysis aspect, this one-of-a-kind module also provides documentation and reports that capture all the calculations. Vectorworks, however, absolves itself of any liability regarding the safety of the rigs analyzed using Braceworks. It notes that the software user is solely responsible for the use of the product and the completeness and accuracy of the analysis and design results.

8. ConnectCAD

ConnectCAD is an add-on module available with Vectorworks Design Suite or Vectorworks Spotlight. It is a signal flow add-on that helps you generate reports on the movement of sound. It also enables you to create schematic diagrams representing how to make devices as well as how to make connections between them. The schematics show how the devices, sockets, and circuits that make up equipment are connected to form a system.

Vectorworks License/Subscription Options

Each Vectorworks product can be acquired through one of the following options.

1. Single-seat License

Person using Apple computer at desk

This is a one-off purchase license for a single user. Although the license is perpetual, you have the option to buy upgrades and yearly maintenance service.

Single-seat licenses can be divided into E series and B series. E series licenses are activated online. Once you purchase an E series license, you would be provided with a download link and a serial number via email. Although you can download the license on two of your computers, you can only use the software on one device at a time. This type of license does not require an internet connection to function. However, you need to connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days in order to maintain your license active status.

B series licenses, on the other hand, are dongle-activated. You can activate and use the application without an internet connection, although any updates to the software require a connection. Your dongle must be plugged into your computer for you to use the software. This is because B-series licenses have workstation-based dongle protection.

However, starting January 1, 2023, Vectorworks will be ditching the perpetual license model in favor of the subscription-based model. As part of this new pricing strategy, the company intends to offer an option to transition customers’ existing perpetual licenses to annual subscriptions at discounted prices for the first year.

2. Maintenance

Maintenance, also known as Vectorworks Select Service may be purchased as an optional addition to a license. It offers you certain benefits such as free upgrades, discounts on training, free access to tutorials, free premium support, and access to an expanded version of Vectorworks cloud service. Vectorworks select service is subscription-based and has to be purchased yearly. It is only available for professional perpetual licenses. It is also only available in certain countries.

The Select Service offering is free to all subscribers (both monthly and annual). However, it is available as an extra for perpetual license holders, who must the perpetual license with maintenance option. Those who do not wish to purchase this service can instead select the perpetual license without maintenance option.

3. Upgrades

If you have a 2020 Vectorworks product and you wish to transition to a more recent version (2023), it is neither cost-effective nor reasonable to buy a brand-new product. This is where upgrades come in. They allow you to simply transition from your existing version to a more recent version at a lower cost. Upgrades also allow you to switch between certain Vectorworks products. Note that prices differ according to the year of the upgrade. For example, an upgrade from Vectorworks Architect 2020 to Vectorworks Architect 2023 costs $2,475.00. Similarly, upgrading from the Vectorworks Architect 2021 to the Vectorworks Architects 2023 version costs $1,650.00, while transitioning from using Vectorworks Architect 2022 to Vectorworks Architect 2023, through an upgrade, will set you back $1,155.00.

4. Network License

People working on computers in office behind glass window

Vectorworks network license is a multiple-seat license. This means that multiple users can install and use the software at a time. Also known as G Series licenses, these licenses have server-based dongle protection. You don’t need to connect to the internet to use the connection. However, the dongle has to be plugged into a central server connecting to all the devices using the software package.

Moreover, do note that the cost of a network license is based on the number of users who will use the product. This is because the price of a network license for one user is the same as the price of one ordinary perpetual license. So, if you are to purchase a network license for 3 users, for example, you would have to multiply the cost of one perpetual license by three.

5. Subscriptions

Vectorworks Inc. offers monthly and annual subscriptions. A monthly subscription will automatically renew every month unless you cancel it up to four days before the renewal date. This subscription is best for short-term needs.  An annual subscription, on the other hand, is more suited to somewhat long-term projects. It will stay active for 12 months with automatic renewal occurring at the end of this period. As with monthly subscription, you can cancel your yearly subscription four days before the renewal date. For a yearly subscription, you pay for 10 months and get two months free. Note that subscription plans are not available in all countries. Check the Vectorworks Select Service page to find out if your country offers the service.

6. Student2Pro License

Student2Pro licenses are discounted licenses for recent graduates. To purchase this license, you must provide school-supplied proof that you graduated with a design-based degree within the past 36 months. You must submit transcripts or a diploma  showing the degree completion and graduation date. A Student2Pro license does not mean reduced features of your preferred product. Rather, it is simply Vectorworks incorporated’s way of welcoming you into the Vectorworks fold. Vectorworks does this by providing a 40% discount on its professional software. However, this discount does not apply on the purchase of Braceworks.

According to the company, the Student2Pro license offers several advantages, including the following:

  • It saves money
  • It allows the budding professionals to get free software upgrades, new content libraries, priority support, training, and friendly pricing on Vectorworks Service Select
  • Water-mark free files and the ability to convert student projects to watermark-free files at no extra cost

Vectorworks Pricing

Having understood the different Vectorworks products and Vectorworks license /subscription options, we will now go into the pricing. The table below shows the different Vectorworks products and their license options. Braceworks and ConnectCAD, on the other hand, are add-ons for Vectorworks Spotlight and Vectorworks Design Suite, hence they are bundled together with the ‘mother’ software.

These prices were acquired from Vectorworks website for the US market as well as authorized resellers for the US market (including Novedge). All prices are in $USD.

Given the hundreds of dollars you have to spend on the different upgrades, what do you get following that spending? What new features have been introduced with the release of Vectorworks 2023 products? Vectorworks has reimagined and reengineered its products to help you save time. This has resulted in the following updates:

  1. User experience: The reengineering has resulted in updates to the user experience, with the 2023 products taking up 80% less memory when calculating and processing section viewports. This change enables you to generate section viewpoints 6x times faster when using Vectorworks 2023 than previous Vectorworks products. Additionally, the 2023 products boast improvements to the cloud and mobile 3D viewers as well as better cloud presentations. Vectorworks 2023 users, who are members of large teams, will also enjoy shared network workflow efficiencies. The Resource Library has also been updated to enable you to find all your symbols, textures, text styles, and other content much more easily.
  2. Improved window and door object creation and a new graphic legend tool in Vectorworks Architect 2023
  3. New site modifier modes in Vectorworks Landmark 2023
  4. Improved interoperability with the introduction of new Revit import tools and options, translation of additional Revit object types, and a new BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) web palette to help you manage and model changes with cloud-based tools
  5. Improvements to Vectorworks Spotlight and ConnectCAD, including faster cable configuration and planning, more efficient and effective cable and device management options, easier selection and editing of objects from the Power Planning Panel, and more
  6. New shaded rendering options

Vectorworks License Discounts

Vectorworks can be bought in bundles at reduced prices. The bundles available vary by reseller. A bundle may be two separate licenses such as a single license and maintenance, for a particular product. It may also be two different products.

Resellers may also offer periodic discounts to customers. Furthermore, Vectorworks offers free student versions of their software packages to students.

Are There Alternatives to Vectorworks?

Having gone through the pricing of Vectorworks’ products, recall that this is a cost consideration. In this vein, you may wish to consider Vectorworks alternatives.

Because Vectorworks has various products, there is no single fully integrated alternative to all the products. However, each product has its own industry rival.

  • AutoCAD could be a suitable alternative to Vectorworks Fundamental and in part an alternative to Vectorworks Architect
  • Revit is a BIM software that rivals both Vectorworks Architect and Vectorworks Landscape. For a breakdown of how Vectorworks and Revit compare, consider checking out our comparison article: Vectorworks vs. Revit.
  • Draftsight and ArchiCAD are also strong industry rivals of Vectorworks

How Much Does ArchiCAD Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/archicad-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/archicad-pricing/#comments Fri, 26 Apr 2019 09:50:26 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=34438 We have previously discussed the benefits of choosing ArchiCAD for your primary CAD software. With ArchiCAD’s BIM capabilities it is certainly a strong competitor in the CAD software landscape.

However, pricing is an important factor in selecting the best CAD solution and the reality is that the pricing systems for CAD software can often become complex. The pricing structure for ArchiCAD is a case in point. This should not discourage you from considering the program, however. In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the pricing system of ArchiCAD.

ArchiCAD License Options

ArchiCAD is available with the following license options:

  1. Commercial ArchiCAD license
  2. Cloud-based ArchiCAD subscription license
  3. Educational ArchiCAD license
  4. Free trial ArchiCAD license
  5. Demo license
  6. Rental license

Graphisoft has regionalized the prices of its products. As such, the prices depend on your locality and local currency. These prices are also not the same across the board (even after converting to USD); it is less in some countries and more in others.

Commercial ArchiCAD License

The commercial ArchiCAD license is a key-based license. There are two types of commercial licenses:

  1. Full license
  2. Rental license

Full License

The full license allows you to use the fully functional ArchiCAD software in perpetuity without any limitations to how you use the software in its existing form. However, you cannot upgrade the ArchiCAD version you purchased to a newer version unless you purchase the Graphisoft Software Services Agreement (SSA) and Graphisoft Forward (FWD) licenses. Essentially, the full license represents the old ArchiCAD pricing model at Graphisoft, i.e., the perpetual licensing model that the company is phasing out. More on this below.

The full license offers access to the desktop-only version of ArchiCAD, which has all the features and runs locally on your computer. It also gives you access to Teamwork, enabling you and your colleagues to share workflows. Additionally, customers can use the SSA and FWD contracts to upgrade their ArchiCAD software annually. Like the perpetual licenses, the SSA and FWD contracts will be phased out.

Rental License

The rental license lets you buy and use the ArchiCAD product for a specific period. You can select a 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month term. With this rental option, you can use the fully functional ArchiCAD software without limitation. However, it is only available in select markets.

Cloud Subscription License

The cloud subscription license is available on a one-month, one-year, or three-year term. There are two types of cloud licenses:

  1. Named license: this cloud license is connected to your Graphisoft ID, meaning it only works if you are signed in.
  2. Floating license: this cloud license is not attached to a specific user. Rather, it is assigned to a group and can be used on demand by any member of this group without being assigned to a particular user through their ID.

The cloud subscription license enables you choose between the Collaborate and the Solo offerings, each giving you unlimited usage. The ArchiCAD Collaborate offering gives you access to the ArchiCAD software as well as the BIMcloud and BIMx Pro software. On the other hand, the ArchiCAD Solo offering only gives access to the ArchiCAD BIM software; it does not come with BIMx or BIMcloud capabilities.

For context, the ArchiCAD BIM software lets you use its powerful design and modeling tools to ideate, design, and deliver projects. BIMx is a presentation and coordination app available on desktops and mobile phones or online via a web browser. Lastly, BIMcloud is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that enables architects, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders to access project models anywhere, anytime, and on any device; it enables real-time collaboration on both large and small projects. BIMcloud replaced the Graphisoft’s Teamwork product.

Free Trial ArchiCAD License

This is a free 30-day version of ArchiCAD that can be used to check if you’d actually like to purchase a license. This is a great option for those who wish to fully evaluate the software prior to any financial commitments.

You can request the ArchiCAD free trial on the ArchiCAD Trial Download page. In order to gain access to the free trial you will be required to create a ‘Graphisoft ID’ which is simply an online account for your ArchiCAD license. You will also need to define whether you are using ArchiCAD for professional or educational purposes.

Some software developers will heavily restrict a free version of their software to encourage users to purchase a license. In the case of ArchiCAD, its free trial limitations are related to how freely you can use the files created by ArchiCAD. Their website states that you can only open the files created by the trial software on the same machine they were created. Therefore sharing files, created by the free ArchiCAD version, with your colleagues would not be possible.

These limitations notwithstanding, the free trial gives you full access to ArchiCAD Collaborate for 30 days. This means you get to use not only the ArchiCAD software but also BIMcloud and BIMx Pro. With this license, you enjoy the software’s full modeling capabilities. Plus, the software does not add watermarks to the projects and documents you generate. You can also choose either a one-seat or multi-seat trial.

Demo License

The Demo license is more of a mode than a license. Usually, ArchiCAD launches in this mode if you start the program once your 30-day trial has elapsed or if you do not have a valid license (software key). You cannot use the save or copy functions in this mode, but you can print documents.

Educational ArchiCAD License (EDU)

ArchiCAD is available for free to students and educators via the EDU license. This license grants access to a fully functional version of the software. You can renew it every year of your academic life, but you cannot use it once you leave academia.

It also has other limitations. For instance, an irremovable watermark is added at the top right corner and is present on documents that you print out. Also, you cannot exchange data using the copy, paste, merge, or hotlink functions between the educational ArchiCAD and commercial ArchiCAD.

To use ArchiCAD for educational purposes, Graphisoft advises you to first download the 30-day free trial and then request a license via the MyArchiCAD website.
For a detailed explanation of these license types, check out the related Help Center article.

ArchiCAD Perpetual License

Most software developers are moving from a perpetual license model to subscription-based pricing. The benefit of subscription pricing is that of simplification; in the past, if you purchased a perpetual license you were usually required to pay for support, upgrades and any other related services.

With subscription pricing you know that there are no hidden costs beyond the monthly or annual subscription fee. Additionally, you have the peace of mind that your software is always up-to-date and you continue to have access to support.

It comes as no surprise then that Graphisoft, the developer of ArchiCAD, cited these advantages as some of the reasons it is moving away from the perpetual licensing model. The company announced in early 2024 that it would phase out perpetual licenses by the end of 2025 in favor of what it called a “future-proof subscription model.”

The company made perpetual licenses available to new customers until December 31, 2024. This means that from January 2025 onwards, new customers couldn’t purchase perpetual licenses to the ArchiCAD software. Meanwhile, according to the announcement, existing customers would enjoy this perk until December 31, 2025. ArchiCAD perpetual licenses would, therefore, cease to exist from 2026 onwards.

What about License Management?

Managing a license in a corporate environment can be an important factor in your purchase decision. If you have multiple potential users of your ArchiCAD license you will want to ensure that you select a licensing method which allows for such flexibility.

ArchiCAD licensing methods diagram

ArchiCAD licensing is available in two formats:

1. A Hardware key

The hardware (HW) key comes in two forms; the Hardware NET or network key (see the network license section below) and the Single Key. The HW NET key contains the network license, while the HW single key contains the single license.

The Single Key is the common hardware license you may have encountered from other software vendors. This licenses a USB dongle and you can run on any PC which has the dongle inserted. Luckily these dongles are cross-platform meaning they will run on both MacOS and Windows systems.

2. A Software key

Much like the hardware key, the software key is available as a ‘single’ or ‘network’ option. The software key is a file that is downloaded onto the computer on which the software is to be installed. These keys may be used for managing single or multiple licenses. The software single key contains and enables you to use the single license, while the software NET key contains and enables you to use the network license.

The license can be downloaded from the License Manager Tool (LMT) software that is installed automatically with ArchiCAD and can itself be downloaded from the Graphisoft website.

Network vs Single License Option

A single key holds one license, with each workstation, therefore, needing its own individual key. A single license lets you use only one ArchiCAD product on just one workstation. It cannot be shared.

But many companies have multiple users of CAD software and prefer to manage the licenses across a LAN. You will have a computer acting as the server for your licenses and all other users on your LAN will be able to access the software license. In such an instance, a network license lets you share multiple licenses across multiple workstations connected to a CodeMeter server. Under this arrangement, licenses are allocated only when needed, which is not the case with single licenses.

ArchiCAD floating network license diagram

Still, under license management, you can also use Graphisoft’s license borrowing feature to ‘lend’ your network key. This feature allows individual users to ‘borrow’ the network license key temporarily whenever they want to go offsite and won’t be connected to the server.

ArchiCAD Pricing – The Full Breakdown

Neon dollar sign

With Graphisoft retiring the perpetual licensing model in stages, new customers can only access the cloud subscription licenses. It is for this reason that this ArchiCAD pricing section only captures the cost of these subscription licenses. We couldn’t independently get ahold of the prices of the perpetual licenses. Plus, we believe that existing customers, for whom the perpetual licenses are still available, are already privy to how much they’d pay or have a way of getting this information directly from Graphisoft.

Here’s a breakdown of the subscription cost based on the new ArchiCAD pricing model. The prices are exclusive of any applicable taxes and have been sourced from Graphisoft’s online store.

Where Can I Purchase ArchiCAD

ArchiCAD application icon on world map

We recommend that you purchase your ArchiCAD license from a local reseller. You will have the benefit of being billed in your local currency and some services may differ depending on your location, therefore, purchasing from an international reseller may not be the best option.

Only purchase from a verified ArchiCAD reseller. It may be tempting to purchase from a cheaper, unofficial source but you are most likely purchasing cracked software which is both illegal and counterproductive if you depend on the software for your professional work.

How do you know if a reseller is verified? You should be able to find them listed on ArchiCAD’s website. To find your local ArchiCAD resellers, you can use ArchiCAD’s default sales agent finder.

You could also purchase your license directly from Graphisoft via their online store. The store automatically detects the country from which you’re logging in and allows you to choose another country. As mentioned earlier, it also bills in that country’s local currency, although this capability isn’t universally available for all. For instance, it’d still bill you in USD if you are logged on from Kenya.

Are There Alternatives to ArchiCAD?

Yes, we compiled a list of the most popular free CAD software, the 10 best 3D CAD software, the best CAD software for collaborative design, and the best architectural CAD software choices. Most solutions will offer a free trial with which you can evaluate the best solution for your needs. Therefore we would recommend checking out the ArchiCAD trial download.

We’ve also made direct comparisons between ArchiCAD and competitors:

Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD is the industry’s first BIM software and a leading architecture software. Its automatic generation of drawings allows users to extract standard files like sections, elevations, and other 2D and 3D views. Because of its versatility and customization to your needs, ArchiCAD is a favorite among many.

Although this falls on the medium-high range of prices among other software, it doesn’t have as steep a learning curve as some high-end CAD software.

CAD Software Compared: AutoCAD vs Vectorworks https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/autocad-vs-vectorworks/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/autocad-vs-vectorworks/#comments Sat, 01 Dec 2018 13:00:10 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=31549 As a comprehensive raster-to-vector solution, Scan2CAD acts as the bridge between an initial sketch and a professional CAD drawing. After converting their drawings in Scan2CAD, our users go on to use a wide array of CAD software—and, naturally, we often get questions about which is best. In this article, we’ll compare two of the major players in architectural CAD software: AutoCAD vs Vectorworks. Read on to check out the history of these two leading suites, what they have to offer users, and much more.

What is AutoCAD?

History

Autocad logo

Fact file
Developed by Autodesk
First released 1982
Latest release AutoCAD 2019 (March 22, 2018)

If there’s any software in the AEC sector that needs no prior introduction, it’s AutoCAD. Its ubiquity today, however, comes as a direct result of its disruptive impact upon its initial release. It might seem almost impossible to imagine today, but, before AutoCAD, there was no commercially available CAD software built for use on PCs.

AutoCAD immediately changed the game. In the years following its 1982 launch, it rose to become the world’s most popular design software. It remains amongst CAD’s giants to this day, with each new release awaited with anticipation by AutoCAD’s multi-million-strong user base.

Of course, AutoCAD hasn’t stayed at the top by standing still. Autodesk, the manufacturers of AutoCAD, have made major updates to the software over the years, with the once-2D software now at ease in 3D. AutoCAD 2019 saw the launch of the first AutoCAD web app, with the first cloud-based version of the software. Check out our brief history of AutoCAD for full details.

Functionality

When discussing what AutoCAD can do, it’s important to think of it not as a standalone program, but instead as a multidisciplinary software suite. This has never been more true than since the launch of AutoCAD 2019, which brought together what were once separate “specialized toolsets” into a single license. This means that AutoCAD today now includes:

  • Architecture
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical
  • MEP
  • Plant 3D
  • Map 3D
  • Raster Design

First created exclusively for 2D design, AutoCAD is still the first port of call for many users looking for a CAD solution specifically for drafting in two dimensions. Don’t overlook AutoCAD’s 3D functionality, though. While it may not quite match the capabilities of pure 3D CAD programs such as SolidWorks in this department, it still has plenty to offer, with solid, surface and mesh modelling features. Rendering tools, meanwhile, mean that you can create realistic 3D models—ideal for technical communication.

User base

While you may think that its relative paucity of 3D features holds it back, AutoCAD’s status as king of 2D drafting mean that it still attracts users across the world. After all, we’ve already touched upon the varied sectors AutoCAD caters for—so, it should come as no surprise to learn that there are a huge number of careers that require proficiency in AutoCAD.

As you may expect, the AEC sector has been a particularly strong source of AutoCAD users, with specialized features for both architecture and various branches of engineering. There’s also Plant 3D, a solution for piping designers, as well as Map 3D, which focuses on GIS applications.

AutoCAD pricing is far from the cheapest on the market, with a year’s subscription setting you back over $1,500. Nonetheless, plenty of businesses around the world still depend on the program for their drafting and design needs. Plenty of competitors, though, are snapping at the heels of this behemoth. It’s time to take a look at another key player in the CAD field: Vectorworks.

What is Vectorworks?

History

Vectorworks logo

Fact file
Developed by Nemetschek
First released 1985
Latest release Vectorworks 2019 (September 11, 2018)

Though Vectorworks may not be able to match AutoCAD in terms of immediate name recognition, its history is almost as long. Just three years after the launch of AutoCAD came the arrival of Graphsoft, the company which would go on to become Vectorworks. While AutoCAD focused on IBM PCs, Graphsoft initially released their software for Apple Macintosh.

It wasn’t until the late 90s that Graphsoft would switch operating systems—with a move to Windows accompanied by the company finally assuming the name we know today: Vectorworks. Owned by German firm Nemetschek since 2000, the company has established itself as a major player in BIM, particularly in European markets.

Today, Vectorworks offers a range of solutions covering sectors as diverse as architecture, entertainment design and urban planning. It’s no wonder, then, that hundreds of thousands of users turning to the company’s specialized software suites. Let’s take a look at exactly what they can do.

Functionality

While AutoCAD has recently moved to integrate tools for a range of industries into a single software suite, Vectorworks continues to offer a number of different products. Exploring what Vectorworks can do, therefore, means diving into each of them individually.

Vectorworks Architect promises to cover the entire design process “from sketch to BIM”. On the way, you’ll see how the program combines the creative freedom with precision drawing tools. The program’s flexible approach is complemented by its analysis tools, which maximize efficiency and allow teams to make smarter decisions from the very earliest phases of a building’s design.

Landscape designers, meanwhile, will want to check out Vectorworks Landmark. This suite is a one-stop-shop containing practically every tool you could possibly need as a landscape professional. GIS, planning, site design, irrigation, graphics and presentation features: they’re all here.

You’ll be able to detect a common theme here. Vectorworks isn’t satisfied in providing just some of the tools you’ll need to complete a project—they focus on comprehensive suites that help you take your design from start to finish. The same approach applies to Spotlight, a suite for entertainment and production design.

While almost every Vectorworks product is highly specialized, its Fundamentals package stands apart. This entry-level offering doesn’t include the complex tools you’ll find in some of the more sector-specific Vectorworks suites, but still offers advanced NURBS surface tools and Parasolid-based 3D modeling.

Want to get all the aforementioned features in a single product? Vectorworks has your back! Vectorworks Designer builds on what Fundamentals offers, then brings in the tools offered by Architect, Spotlight and Landmark.

User base

Vectorworks 2019 graphics module support for sheet layers

Focusing on specific sectors has allowed Vectorworks to carve itself out some important niches. The architecture industry in the U.K., for example, has enthusiastically embraced Vectorworks Architect—in fact, the suite stands as the most popular BIM solution in the country.

Vectorworks doesn’t only have fans across the pond, though. Architectural firms the world over are turning to the software’s innovative range of features, from GKV Architects in New York through to the Royal Swedish Opera. All in all, there are now over 650,000 Vectorworks users worldwide.

AutoCAD vs Vectorworks

Want a handy side-by-side comparison of these two CAD giants? Take a look at our table below to compare some of the key features of AutoCAD and Vectorworks.

AutoCAD Vectorworks
Single suite combining numerous toolsets Range of specialized software suites
Annual subscription Perpetual licensing available—subscription territory-dependent
Used across the architecture and engineering sectors Popular in architecture, landscape design and entertainment
Primarily a 2D tool with some 3D functionality Includes Parasolid-based 3D modeling
Lack of simulation tools Complex analysis tools make Vectorworks a ‘start-to-finish’ option
Millions of users worldwide Over 650,000 Vectorworks users

With both companies aiming squarely for the architecture market, there’s plenty to consider for users in this field looking to invest in new software. AutoCAD has long been known for the standard of its 2D drafting tools—after all, there’s a reason companies around the world continue to turn to Autodesk’s flagship product, which is approaching the four-decade mark. However, companies looking for a single suite offering a holistic approach to design would be well served by checking out Vectorworks, too.

How Much Does Solidworks Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/solidworks-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/solidworks-pricing/#comments Sun, 30 Sep 2018 10:47:19 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=30624 In the sphere of 3D CAD software, SolidWorks is among the biggest names. Its parametric, feature-based approach to design made it an instant standout upon its release in 1995. Today, its popularity remains undiminished, with over 6 million active users; it’s also one of the best parametric modeling software on the market. Those looking to join the growing community, however, may find it hard to come across accurate SolidWorks pricing.

It’s for this reason that we here at Scan2CAD set about to get to the bottom of how much SolidWorks costs. This is an addition to our SolidWorks series that discusses SolidWorks basics, SolidWorks keyboard shortcuts, free SolidWorks models, and much more. So, read on for information about the SolidWorks pricing structure, and to find out more about the purchasing options available.

How to Buy SolidWorks

If you’re looking into SolidWorks for business or personal use and wish to purchase any of the available solutions, you have two options. You can purchase either from the Dassault Systèmes’ online store or through authorized resellers. The number of products available on the online store is nonetheless limited to just a handful. You can only access 3DExperience SolidWorks and SolidWorks cloud. So, if you’re looking for other SolidWorks products, you will have to contact your local reseller.

This means Dassault Systèmes leans more towards the reseller model than direct sales. And for good reason. The reseller model benefits SolidWorks users, as the resellers do more than merely sell the product. One reseller, in fact, refers to their relationship with a potential buyer as a partnership. The resellers partner with buyers to understand their unique challenges and then recommend the right solution. For instance, some offer financing services. They also offer after-purchase services such as effective support and deep product and industry knowledge to help the buyers achieve long-term success.

You’ll, therefore, have to find a reseller covering your area if you want to purchase a SolidWorks license. You can either search for a commercial reseller at the SolidWorks website or get in touch with Dassault Systèmes, who’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. Buying SolidWorks from a Reseller

Map of United States with pins

We decided to check out a few resellers for ourselves to see what they had on offer. One common thread was this: for accurate pricing, you need to get a quote.

The reason for this is that—as we’ve explored in our brief history of SolidWorks—the software suite caters for a range of different disciplines. This means that there is not just one SolidWorks, but many. More to that, no two resellers sell SolidWorks products with the same license period. For instance, some sellers elect to only sell term licenses, while others sell both term and perpetual licenses. It is, therefore, difficult to immediately determine exactly which SolidWorks products are available on a perpetual license and which can be rented – most resellers we have come across only sell software on term licenses.

What’s more, resellers price the myriad products according to their areas of operations, meaning the prices will vary from one currency to another. For example, a Canada-based reseller sells the 1-year term SolidWorks 3D CAD standard license with cloud service for CA$3,792.00, while a U.S.-based seller has priced this product at US$2,820.00. (The prices are correct as of February 2025.) Although certain factors such as taxation may be at play, converting the former at current exchange rates shows a price variance of about US$146.73, with the U.S. pricing being higher.

Regardless, resellers generally follow a basic template given the many packages available. They will gauge which one is right for you by taking into account factors such as your industry, your budget and what you intend to do with SolidWorks. Additionally, you’ll also have to choose between purchasing a license outright or opting to subscribe (though this depends on the SolidWorks product as some of them do not have a subscription option). All of this makes it difficult to define a single “SolidWorks price”.

It’s also worth noting that resellers will often offer subscription contracts that include extras. These contracts apply even when you purchase a perpetual license. These extras may encompass, for example, dedicated customer support, in addition to automatic software updates. You may even have access to additional hints, tips, and training resources from your reseller of choice.

SolidWorks Pricing in 2025

Example of engineering in Solidworks

By now, you’ll realise that your exact SolidWorks price will vary depending on the factors listed above. Prices may also vary from reseller to reseller, with some offering discounts on specific packages or products. However, there has to be a starting point from which all resellers work to define their SolidWorks pricing. And indeed there is: the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or MSRP.

However, the pricing information of most SolidWorks products is not publicly available on SolidWork’s website. To retrieve it, you must first request a quote, with SolidWorks requiring you to input your details on their website. The absence of publicly available SolidWorks pricing data appears to be an industry standard, with many resellers also shying away from displaying this information on their website, again, due to the factors we have mentioned above.

In contrast to AutoCAD pricing, which now includes only subscription options, SolidWorks offers both subscription (term) and perpetual licensing. Only a few SolidWorks products lack perpetual licenses. Which is the right choice for your business will depend on whether you prefer to stick with a single version of SolidWorks, or would find it useful to have access to updates as they are released.

You can check out the 2025 SolidWorks prices for a wide variety of SolidWorks packages in the tables below. We have sourced the pricing data below from one reseller serving the U.S., so the prices mainly apply to consumers in the North American market. Please note that pricing may vary by territory and by reseller. Also, unless indicated otherwise, the prices relate to standalone licenses rather than network licenses.

SolidWorks Pricing: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the different SolidWorks pricing tiers?

Not quite sure what the differences are between the Standard, Professional and Premium versions of SolidWorks? We’ll break it down for you.

  • SolidWorks Standard is the cheaper of the three options, and includes a vast array of 3D design features. In fact, when it comes to design, modeling, and parts and assembly, Standard offers the exact same features as the other three tiers. Standard also offers sheet metal and mold design tools, as well as 3D animations and some basic rendering.
  • SolidWorks Professional augments these tools with functionality for costing, visualization and design checking. Photo-realistic rendering is available with this tier, which also features a useful Toolbox that makes it easy to access prebuilt models. You can also reverse engineer a part from a scan using this tier.
  • SolidWorks Premium, the most expensive tier, includes the full gamut of possible features. This is a great option for users who need to make extensive use of simulation tools, including time-based motion and linear stress analysis. It also includes routing functionality, including pipe and tube routing, electrical, cable and wiring routing, and rectangular routing.

2. What are the differences between perpetual licenses and term licenses?

SolidWorks offers two main SolidWorks license options: a term license and a perpetual license. As the name suggests, the term license allows you to use the software program for a limited time in a model akin to renting the application. Most resellers offer a three-month or one-year term. The term license is considerably cheaper and is ideal for users who are not regular users of the SolidWorks product they intend to purchase. It is also suited for freelancers, startups, or hobbyists.

There are two types of term licenses: network licenses and standalone licenses. Standalone licenses are installed and restricted to one device. Network licenses, on the other hand, can be moved from one device to another.

The second license option, the perpetual license, does not have an expiry date and can be used in perpetuity. For this reason, it is more expensive than a term license in the short term. But despite the added cost, this license can be transferred from one computer to another as it has an activate/deactivate option.

With it has a higher initial cost, the SolidWorks perpetual license is cheaper over the long term. For instance, the graph below indicates that the cumulative cost of the term license exceeds the upfront cost of the perpetual license during the third year. That said, some resellers charge subscriptions to their support services in increments of one year. So, the long-term costs may be high if you opt to pay for this option.

SolidWorks Perpetual License vs. Term License Cost Over Time

SolidWorks Perpetual License vs. Term License Cost Over Time (source)

There are two main types of SolidWorks’ perpetual license: the perpetual standalone license, intended for only one user at a time, and a SolidNetWork License (SNL), which allows multiple users that are sharing a network to use the same license. Also known as a perpetual floating license, the latter is more expensive than the former.

As a student, you do not have to worry about the term or perpetual license as you can simply purchase SolidWorks for students. As we have detailed below, it is cheaper than the other offerings.

3. Can I get updates on a SolidWorks perpetual license?

Yes, provided you pay the subscription fee your reseller charges (known as a service subscription) on top of the cost of the perpetual license. Otherwise, you cannot receive updates.

Though the subscription requires you to part with some money annually, the updates that accompany this expenditure are beneficial. This is especially because designs created and saved using newer versions of SolidWorks are not compatible with older versions. Simply put, SolidWorks does not support backward compatibility of the files.

If your work requires collaboration with other professionals who are likely to use newer versions of SolidWorks, it would be best to consider paying the subscription fee if you are a perpetual license holder. Else, you can simply choose the term license option because of the reason below.

4. Can I get updates on a SolidWorks term license?

Yes. Resellers treat a term license as a subscription. In this regard, term license customers receive all the benefits that subscribers enjoy, including updates and support.

5. Is a SolidWorks add-on on a term license compatible with a software product on a SolidWorks perpetual license?

Yes. You can use the term license of a SolidWorks add-on with a perpetual license of a compatible SolidWorks software and vice versa. This holds provided the term license had not expired.

6. Can I change my existing license to a different license? What are the associated costs?

Firstly, you can change a SolidWorks perpetual standalone license to a SolidWorks perpetual floating license (SNL license). For this, you have to pay a one-time fee to facilitate the conversion. If you wish to convert a SolidWorks SNL license to a perpetual standalone license, you also have to part with an administrative fee. This fee covers the removal of the license from the network as well as the conversion.

That said, you cannot convert your term license to a perpetual license. Similarly, you cannot roll a perpetual license into a term license. This limitation arises because resellers treat these two categories of licenses as different purchases.

7. Does SolidWorks have a free trial? How long is the SolidWorks free trial period?

SolidWorks is available for free throughout a trial period that can last for 7,15, or 30 days, depending on your reseller. The free trial provides access to the latest release of SolidWorks Premium as well as add-ons such as SolidWorks Simulation, SolidWorks CAM, SolidWorks Visualize, and SolidWorks MBD. You can also test other products on request by simply contacting your local reseller.

It is noteworthy, however, that the product provided via the free trial does not require installation. Instead, it is available in an online environment. Of course, this means you must have a fast internet connection if you wish to have the best experience.

8. What if I want to combine SolidWorks with other Dassault Systèmes software?

If you’re familiar with Dassault Systèmes as a company, you’re sure to have come across the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. This combines aspects from different software (such as SolidWorks, CATIA and DraftSight) into unique software suites. Each suite has a specific job role in mind—for example, Boeing certifies its airplanes using the License to Fly suite. Check out the 3DEXPERIENCE website for information on the available packages.

9. What discounts are available on the standard SolidWorks pricing?

Couple holding piggy bank

Although any company that really needs SolidWorks will likely be able to justify investing large sums in it, it’s still always nice to get a little more for your money. So, what possibilities are there to save money on your SolidWorks license?

  • Though far from a given, reseller discounts may occasionally be available. With only a limited number of resellers licensed to serve each territory, however, the likelihood of competition driving down prices is somewhat low. Nonetheless, be sure to keep an eye out for any bargains.
  • SolidWorks for Students allows students to get the first-class functionality of SolidWorks all while paying bargain-bin prices. That’s because the student version of SolidWorks has a MSRP of just $60/year. The figure does not include taxes, so it is ultimately bound to be higher. Though this doesn’t quite match up to the free CAD software for students that other manufacturers offer, it’s still a steal for those in education. SolidWorks for students offers capabilities such as 3D CAD modelling, rendering, communities, certification, training, and additional features. And like all other offerings, it is sold through resellers.
  • SolidWorks for Institutions: It may also be worth getting in touch with your institution, as they may even be able to offer you SolidWorks for free. That’s because resellers sell the SolidWorks Student Education Network for schools. This offering provides licensing to the complete suite of SolidWorks products for students and staff. These include SolidWorks 3D CAD premium as well as simulation, electrical, data management, documentation, and manufacturing tools/software.
  • Volume discounts, however, do not appear to be common with SolidWorks. Rather than offer multi-user licensing, as Autodesk does for AutoCAD, Dassault Systèmes offer standalone and floating licenses. The former are specific to a single machine; the latter is usable by multiple machines, but only by one user at a time.
  • You’ll also be able to download a free trial of SolidWorks to test the waters. As is the case with regular purchases, trial downloads are only available via resellers.

10. Should I consider a cheaper alternative to SolidWorks?

Screenshot of Autodesk Inventor

Though SolidWorks offers outstanding 3D CAD capabilities, using it involves quite a sizeable outlay. If you’re wincing at the prospect of shelling out thousands for a package, then you may wish to explore some alternative options.

While you can only be sure of the true SolidWorks experience by buying the real thing, the list below offers some low-cost programs with fantastic 3D CAD features.

  • Autodesk Inventor, whose freeform and parametric modeling tools make it a powerful competitor to SolidWorks—while costing half the price
  • Onshape, a cloud-based CAD option which aims to push the boundaries of what CAD can do, and has also garnered rave reviews
  • Solid Edge, a more basic software that nonetheless offers fantastic PLM capabilities

To learn more about each of these, as well as checking out some more alternative programs, visit our guide to the top 5 affordable SolidWorks alternatives.

Parting Shot

Over 6 million users rely on SolidWorks to fulfill their engineering and manufacturing requirements. SolidWorks is popular because it is not a single product. Rather, it is a term that refers to a whole suite of products, including SolidWorks 3D CAD premium as well as simulation, electrical, data management, documentation, and manufacturing tools/software. Each of these tools/software has a different price and is not sold directly by Dassault Systèmes. Thus, SolidWorks pricing is not uniform. In this analysis, nonetheless, we have summarised the 2025 prices provided by a North America-based reseller.

How Much Does AutoCAD Cost? Pricing Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/autocad-pricing/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/autocad-pricing/#comments Fri, 06 Jul 2018 13:00:35 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=28374 When choosing to invest in CAD software, there are a number of factors to consider. One of the most important of these, of course, is cost. For this reason, demystifying the often complex pricing structures of CAD licenses is incredibly helpful. How much, for example, will an AutoCAD license really cost you?

Luckily, the team here at Scan2CAD are ready to help. In this article, we’ll explain the ins and outs of AutoCAD pricing. We’ll also go into detail on the options available to you when it comes to purchasing your licence. Read on for everything you need to know!

How Much Does AutoCAD Cost?

Autocad logo

It’s a simple question, surely? Well, not quite. Software manufacturers have shifted from offering perpetual licenses to subscriptions over the years, with the CAD industry proving no exception. As such, Autodesk stopped selling perpetual licenses for AutoCAD (alongside most of its other products) on August 1st, 2016.

The result of this shift is that, instead of paying a one-off fee to be able to use AutoCAD forever, users now pay for a rolling subscription to maintain access to AutoCAD although you can also get AutoCAD for free though on very specific conditions. And if you don’t qualify for any of those conditions, there is always a range of free CAD software you can use.

You can see the cost of an AutoCAD subscription direct from Autodesk in the table below.

Subscription length Price
Monthly $250.00
1 year  $2,030.00
3 years  $6,085.00
Prices as at January 2025

As the table shows, paying for a longer period naturally means a greater upfront cost. However, it’s worth noting that your monthly costs are lower if you choose to commit to one of the longer subscription lengths. Here’s what the per month costs look like when compared side by side.

Subscription length Total cost Monthly cost Monthly saving

Saving (%)

Total saving ($)

Monthly $250.00 $250.00 $0.00

0%

$0.00

1 year $2,030.00 $169.17 $80.83

32.33%

$969.96

3 years $6,085.00 $169.03 $80.97

32.39%

$2,914.92

Prices as at January 2025

Thus, monthly costs drop as you opt for longer subscription periods. That being said, you will see somewhat diminishing returns. Your cost per month of usage is a $80.83 cheaper if you opt for a yearly subscription over the monthly plan or $80.97 cheaper if you choose the 3-year plan over a monthly one. Therefore, the monthly saving you will realize with the three-year plan is quite marginal (about $0.14). This is a departure from Autodesk’s previous pricing strategy, wherein the 3-year plan resulted in a comparatively larger drop (about $7.78 per month, based on the 2022 prices).

This isn’t to say that the longer-term options aren’t worth considering, though. If your business has used AutoCAD for a long time, for example, and is certain to stick with the software for the duration, then opting for a 3-year deal may be a good choice. But keep in mind that presently (since 2023), the monthly savings you accrue if you select this longer-term (three-year)  option are only marginally higher compared to what you would get if you chose the one-year option. Those who are just trying out AutoCAD, however, should probably steer clear of the longest subscription periods. Here, it may even be worth paying for a monthly licence at first.

Pros and Cons of the Subscription Model

Pros of the Subscription Model

There are some upsides to the AutoCAD subscription model. These include:

  1. Subscription gets you access to the latest version of AutoCAD as soon as it comes out. As such, you won’t need to worry about missing out on the latest features.
  2. It saves money. If you previously bought perpetual licenses for each new version of AutoCAD, the subscription model could actually save you money.
  3. You also get support and maintenance as long as you stay subscribed.

Cons of the Subscription Model

If you’re used to perpetual licensing, then it can be easy to see the downsides of the shift to subscriptions.

  1. The most obvious disadvantage is that you need to keep paying for the software year in, year out. Fail to do so, and you’ll lose access to AutoCAD. This in turn means that you won’t be able to use the files you created in AutoCAD, causing a real headache for your business.

In understanding this limitation of the subscription-based model, which is likely to put off some would-be customers from purchasing the AutoCAD due to the associated long-term expenses, Autodesk introduced Autodesk financing and Autodesk Flex.

Autodesk Financing

According to a study, financing influences the purchasing decisions of 45% of global digital consumers, with 36% of the respondents noting that financing allowed them to purchase a more expensive option than what they had initially considered. Additionally, 31% of digital consumers would not consider a purchase outright if the seller did not have a financing plan.

Autodesk understands the inherent importance of payment plans, which is why it offers a financing plan for buyers looking to spend $1,000 or more. Mainly available for subscription plans that are annual or longer, the financing is intended to spread the costs, enhancing your business’s financial flexibility.

Autodesk’s financing application is available in the payment section of its online store. The submission and processing stages are conducted online. The approval is subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions, including but not limited to, how long the business has been in operation and business credit reporting with commercial bureaus. You are also required to furnish Autodesk with information on the business’s contact details, business structure, number of employees, tax ID, and more.

This financing is only available to users looking to purchase the 1-year and 3-year subscriptions for all Autodesk products on its online store. It is not available to monthly subscribers or buyers seeking Autodesk Flex tokens.

Autodesk Flex

Introduced in August 2021, Autodesk Flex is designed for occasional users of Autodesk products, including AutoCAD. Flex allows users to purchase tokens to access and use AutoCAD (or any other supported Autodesk software) for 24 hours at a time. In addition to enabling you to access the software, this purchase lets you add as many Flex users as you want using your Autodesk account.

To use AutoCAD for a day, you must expend seven tokens. The price of one token varies depending on the number of tokens you wish to purchase. At a minimum, Autodesk allows you to purchase 100 tokens at $3 per token. Therefore, the lowest amount you can spend to purchase Autodesk Flex tokens in bulk is $300. Here’s a breakdown of the available Autodesk Flex options.

While the total cost for each token quantity is quite significant, the Autodesk Flex offering is considerably cheap when you break down the cost on a per-day basis. For example, considering Autodesk will deduct seven tokens per day for you to use AutoCAD, you will spend between $18.41 and $21.00 per day, depending on the per-token price, which is based on number of tokens you purchase (in bulk).

To further ensure cost savings, Autodesk recommends that all the users utilizing your Flex close AutoCAD when not in use to avoid being charged for idle time.

AutoCAD Discounts

Are Volume Discounts Available?

A desktop, laptop and tablet

If several employees within your business use AutoCAD, then the prospect of paying out thousands for individual licenses can be somewhat daunting. Previously, that is before February 2023, standalone licenses were not the only option. Multi-user licenses used to be available, too, and could offer you serious cost savings when compared to buying licenses one-by-one.

Multi-user licenses (or network licenses), as the name suggests, allowed you to run AutoCAD from multiple machines within your organization. When you purchased a network license, you chose how many machines you wished to buy access for.

As an example, if you purchased 10 licenses, you could run AutoCAD on 10 machines at any one time. However, you were free to install the software on more machines for ease of access. If, for example, you had 10 desktop machines and 10 laptops, you could install the software on all these machines. This would allow a user to switch from their desktop to their laptop when away from the office.

However, and unfortunately, Autodesk retired multi-user subscriptions starting February 2023. This meant that these subscriptions could not – and cannot – be renewed moving forward. So, to answer the question: there are no volume discounts in the form of multi-used licenses, at least for the time being.

Is There a Discount for Buying AutoCAD alongside other Autodesk Products?

Autodesk's industry collections

Though the range of functions offered by AutoCAD is incredibly broad, it can’t do it all. Many businesses will require a range of different software to meet their needs. If this is the case, then you should explore Autodesk’s various industry collections.

Autodesk’s industry collections bundle together several software packages with the aim of fully meeting the needs of a specific sector. The Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection, for example, includes AutoCAD alongside Revit, Civil 3D, Autodesk Forma, Navisworks Manage, among other software. Autodesk has began bundling software to meet the needs of the different professions within the AEC industry. For this reason, you can now find bundles for architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, civil engineers and construction professionals within the AEC Collection. To visualize just how staggering the cost savings are, take a look at the table below, which includes AEC Collection software from a few years ago; prices are nonetheless current.

As you can see, even users who only need a couple of the above programs will see savings of thousands of dollars per year. Meanwhile, for users who need access to multiple Autodesk software packages, industry collections such as this one are truly a steal. It’s worth noting that multi-user licenses are also available for industry collections, offering you the chance to save even more if you’re a larger business.

Industry collections, meanwhile, set Autodesk up as a strong competitor to its rival Dassault Systèmes, which similarly offers software bundles, which it terms “industry experiences”. Check out our comparison of Dassault Systèmes software to see what the company has to offer.

Are Any Other Discounts Available?

15% off discount tag

If you’re getting AutoCAD from the Autodesk Online Store, then the prices above will generally be the prices you pay. However, some lucky users can get AutoCAD for free: educational users.

Educational licenses have been offered at no cost to users since 2014, with such licenses valid for three years. Provided that you still have a valid academic email address (usually .edu for users in the United States), you can renew this license for further three-year periods in future.

Meanwhile, discounts were also available for those who had perpetual licenses for legacy versions of AutoCAD, subject to Autodesk’s terms and conditions. If you were willing to trade this license in between November 7, 2020, and January 22, 2021, then you could get 15% off a 1-year or 20% for the 3-year subscription to AutoCAD.

This offer was available in ASEAN countries, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Taiwan. It was applicable to qualifying seats of 1998-2021 perpetual licenses. You retained the option to switch back to your old perpetual license if you weren’t satisfied.

With this offer now gone, you can nonetheless take advantage of Autodesk’s deals and special offers, which come by periodically.

Should I Buy from a Reseller or Direct from Autodesk?

Middleman represented by male symbols

Stick with trusted resellers—or cut out the middleman?

Back in the days when software was distributed on CD-ROMs rather than as downloadable executables, local resellers dominated the market. Since then, however, CAD has evolved. Purchasing AutoCAD now is simply a matter of downloading the software and waiting to receive your product key—something that can be completed in minutes, not days.

The result of this is a shift away from channel sales and towards direct sales, with customers able to buy direct from the Autodesk Online Store. Nonetheless, Autodesk hasn’t done away with its worldwide network of resellers; indeed, it maintains relationships with dedicated local partners across the globe.

So, how do you choose between resellers and direct sales? Naturally, cost is one of the factors that comes to the forefront. The prices listed on a reseller’s website tend to closely match those of Autodesk itself, which can make an initial comparison tricky.

However, reseller prices may (and do) vary, meaning there may be some flexibility with regards to pricing. Indeed, some users have reported hefty discounts when buying through resellers. They are also a great choice if you’re seeking a personalized quote for your business, especially as resellers have a much closer connection with specific local markets than the multinational Autodesk.

Aside from the cost, you should also consider the standard of your local resellers, particularly with regards to customer service. Choosing a reputable reseller with a solid track record could gain you access to valuable support should you experience any issues with your software. This is likely to be more personal than the support offered by Autodesk—and they’ll quite literally be speaking your language!

AutoCAD Alternatives

Screenshot of DraftSight, a popular alternative to AutoCAD

No matter whether you choose a standalone or network license, AutoCAD alone or an industry collection, or buy direct or from a reseller, one fact remains constant: you’ll need to fork out thousands per year on an AutoCAD subscription. With AutoCAD pricing so uniformly high, then, you may ask yourself: what are the alternatives?

Luckily, there are other options on the market when it comes to 2D and 3D CAD software. One such package is AutoCAD LT, a ‘lite’ version of AutoCAD with more limited functionality, but priced at just $65.00 monthly, $515.00 per year, or $1,545.00 payable every 3 years.

AutoCAD vs. AutoCAD LT

A cheaper and cost-effective option to AutoCAD across all three pricing categories, AutoCAD LT only offers precision 2D drafting and documentation capabilities. It does not support 3D modeling functionalities. Additionally, it does not have built-in programming and automation capabilities as it does not support AutoLISP. AutoCAD LT also lacks additional features and functionalities, which are available on AutoCAD. We have listed some of these features below, but for a more comprehensive list, visit Autodesk’s website.

AutoCAD LT does not support or offer the following features/capabilities:

  • Tracked changes within drawings
  • CAD standards checker
  • Ability to export blocks to Inventor and BIM 360; integrate coordinate BIM models; import or export drawings to Inventor and BIM 360; import or export from Fusion 360 and Revit; and attach, edit, and display point clouds
  • Mechanical, electrical, and piping (MEP) capabilities such as accurate MEP documentation, the ability to create MEP drawings, MEP objects, MEP/HVAC symbol libraries, and more
  • Some electrical design functionalities such as intelligent electrical symbols, electrical standards, and wiring diagram error checking
  • MAP 3D toolsets such as the ability to create and maintain CAD and GIS data, reports for gas, wastewater, and water, the ability to insert geomapping data, and more
  • Some mechanical design features, including automated creation of the bill of materials, manufacturing parts library, and the ability to automate part updates, just to mention a few
  • Some architectural design features, e.g., intelligent architectural objects library, ability to automate with the Architecture toolset

The absence of these features and capabilities makes AutoCAD LT cheaper than AutoCAD, as summarised in the below table.

AutoCAD Alternatives from Other Developers

If you’re happy to venture outside of the Autodesk stable, however, then some of the best known AutoCAD alternatives are:

  • DraftSight, a product from rival firm Dassault Systèmes
  • BricsCAD, which offers perpetual, rental, volume and network licenses
  • TurboCAD, with licenses for 2D/3D versions of the software starting from $99.99 per year

Of course, desktop programs aren’t the only option for CAD professionals. Innovative cloud-based CAD software is now catching up to (and, in some cases, surpassing) the functionality of traditional programs, with Onshape proving one of the leaders in this field.

Meanwhile, if you are willing to invest in Autodesk software, then your business may be better served by choosing the BIM software Revit over AutoCAD. Check out our guide to Autodesk software compared for the full lowdown.

Parting Shot

AutoCAD is a highly popular offering. That’s thanks to the features packed into the software. Starting 2016, Autodesk ceased the sale of perpetual licenses in favor of a subscription model that currently has three pricing tiers: monthly, yearly, and after every 3 years. In this pricing explained article, we have delved into the 2025 prices of AutoCAD as well as the cheaper AutoCAD LT version. We have explored Autodesk financing, Flex tokens, and possible discounts. That said, you can also venture outside of the Autodesk ecosystem if you are open to try AutoCAD alternatives.
