They figured they would write a bunch to see which one would be successful, and then go with it. In fact, Autodesk was the name of one of the programs.

The screen grab of the “1982” AutoCAD is not from 1982. Since it shows drop down menus, it would be at least Release 9, which came out in 1987.

As for Autodesk not revising DWG for five releases, I believe this has to do with the future cloud-version of full AutoCAD.
