In fact, the Scan2CAD blog is laden with free CAD resources in the form of educational articles and guides that cover various topics across CAD, CAE, CAM, CNC, and BIM. You can access articles like the guide to BIM, the BIM software you should use, the complete guide to AutoCAD data extraction feature, the complete guide to AutoCAD object snap feature, and scaling in AutoCAD, just to mention a few.

You can also find how-to articles, including how to prepare CAD files for CNC machining, how to batch plot drawings in AutoCAD, how to resolve the ‘drawing file is not valid’ error in AutoCAD, how to create and customize AutoCAD palettes, and how to improve slow AutoCAD performance

In addition, we are also on YouTube. Our Scan2CAD channel is the home of tutorials that provide step-by-step instructions on how to complete certain CAD-related tasks. For instance, you can learn how to convert PDF to DWG in AutoCAD, how to batch convert multiple PDFs to DXF, and how to import floor plans to different software like Revit, Vectorworks, ArchiCAD, and SketchUp.

Free CAD Software for Beginners

As a beginner, you may not have the resources to purchase a perpetual license or subscribe to CAD software. Although many CAD programs offer free trials, these typically last only a few weeks — often too short to fully grasp the concepts.

In addition, learning how to use paid software that you won’t be able to use long-term may not be ideal. In such an instance, and before making enough money to afford a subscription or landing a position in a company that pays the subscription fee, free CAD software is the way to go. (Alternatively, if you are a student, you can register to access free student licenses to various CAD software.)

Today, many free CAD programs are available. And we have, in fact, previously discussed the top 14 free CAD software to download. Our list includes both 2D and 3D CAD software.

The free 2D drafting software includes DraftSight, QCAD, LibreCAD, and Draft IT Systems. The free 3D modeling software includes the SketchUp Web App, Onshape (free plan), FreeCAD, Sweet Home 3D, and TinkerCAD, just to mention a few. Click onF the link above to view the complete list.

Free CAD Software for Students

Software developers support students who want to learn their software by offering free educational licenses. Designed to help them kick-start their careers in design, engineering, architecture, or manufacturing, these licenses are a boon to beginners. Third-Party Free CAD Courses

E-learning platforms like Udemy, Coursera, and EDX feature free online courses. Coursera and EDX also offer online programs from world-class universities, complete with certificates. But you must pay in order to receive the certificates. That said, and depending on the platform and the program’s terms and conditions, you can enroll in each course and complete it at no cost. For its part, Udemy has plenty of free CAD courses. To access them, filter the results by price and check the appropriate ‘Free’ box.

Free CAD Tutorials

PTC offers free tutorials through PTC University. The tutorials offer training on the company’s products, from Creo, Windchill, and ThingWorx to Vuforia and Codebeamer. They cover the product’s features. However, you’ll need to create and log in to a PTC University account to access the tutorials.

Siemens provides Solid Edge tutorials. You can select between three difficulty levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and the tutorial school level (all ages, elementary school, middle school, and high school). This means the tutorials accommodate different users and are especially tailored for beginners. You can also access Siemens-sponsored free on-demand webinars that discuss various subjects. Some of these subjects include generative design, 3D design, 3D printing, assembly modeling, 3D rendering, and much more.

Away from the software developers, user-generated tutorials are equally helpful. This is especially true because such tutorials will delve into nuanced topics borne out of their day-to-day interactions with the software. Many such tutorials are readily available on YouTube. To access them, simply type in the software and another keyword for the topic you want to learn. The likelihood that you’ll find a video covering that topic is always non-zero.

In addition to using the search bar to find the videos, you can also subscribe to channels that publish CAD tutorials. For instance, Lars Christensen has a series of Fusion 360 tutorials for beginners. Another creator, JOKO Engineeringhelp, has published tutorials on FreeCAD and Alibre. The channel CADCAMTutorials includes tutorials on AutoCAD, Creo, Fusion 360, Inventor, and SolidWorks.

Free CAD Libraries and Templates

Graphisoft, the developer of ArchiCAD, lets you download sample projects to learn new ideas as well as new approaches to modeling, documentation, and how to handle metadata. SolidWorks also offers electrical project samples for SolidWorks Electrical 2022 users to enable them to discover the possibilities and capabilities of the software.

Most developers, however, don’t offer free samples of 2D drawings or 3D models. If you’re looking for such, perhaps because you want to use them as templates to learn design and modeling skills, third-party CAD libraries are your best bet. GrabCAD Library, for instance, has over 6 million free CAD files. There are also plenty of websites and libraries with free template title blocks, free DXF designs, free CAD blocks, and free 3D CAD models.

CAD Forums and Communities for Beginners

Almost every CAD program has an online community or forum where users can ask questions and find solutions. Such communities are moderated and maintained by the software’s developer and can be accessed via their official website.

As free CAD resources, CAD forums and communities are a repository of reliable user-generated information. Beginners can rely on such information to solve issues they encounter while using CAD software.

In addition to the developer-run CAD forums and communities, beginners can use Reddit. Reddit is a social media platform founded on forums and communities. The forums on this platform are known as subreddits and are focused on a specific subject or interest.

Some of the subreddits you can use to find free CAD resources include r/3Dmodeling, r/MechanicalEngineering, r/3Dprinting, r/FreeCAD, and so on. You can choose to join these subreddits. Alternatively, you can append the keyword “Reddit” to your query on the search engine’s search bar. This approach helps you find and access information from different forums.

Conclusion

Kick-starting your career in design, engineering, architecture, or manufacturing can seem daunting, especially considering that the popular CAD software applications are expensive. Additionally, some of them have a steep learning curve, which makes using them a tad intimidating.

Despite that, you don’t have to struggle, given that you can learn design without spending a dime and at your own pace. This is thanks to free CAD resources as well as free CAD software. Some of these resources include Scan2CAD, which offers guides, in-depth educational articles, and video tutorials. CAD software developers also provide tutorials, guides, and courses that help you get your foot in the door.

5 Sites With Free Template Title Blocks to Download https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/free-title-blocks/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 13:28:54 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=46427 It is important to make CAD drawings presentable for both presentations and printing purposes. And one of the ways of doing so is by incorporating a neat title block in the drawing sheet where you place your CAD drawing.

A Title Block holds important information to help the person using the drawing for construction or machining to understand things like the scale used in the engineering drawing, the type of units used in dimensions, the type of material used, whether the design has been verified by engineers and whether there are any revisions among other things.

However, drawing a title block from scratch may cost a CAD designer precious time especially when dealing with assembly drawings, which include drawings of more than one component. CAD designers can download free title blocks online to avoid wasting time drawing the title blocks from scratch.

We shall look at 5 sites that offer free title block templates for CAD designers in this post. However, before we get into listing the sites, it is important to understand several issues about title blocks to understand what you should be looking for when downloading the free title blocks from the sites. We shall first shed some light on what title blocks are, different types of title blocks, and different sizes and locations of title blocks within a CAD drawing.

What is a Title Block in CAD?

A title block is a neatly arranged area on a CAD drawing sheet that contains specific information about the 2D drawing or 3D model that appears on that particular drawing sheet.

Different CAD applications come with different types of title block layouts placed in different templates. Most of these templates place the title block at the bottom right corner of the drawing sheet and also include a border that extends along the edges of the drawing sheet.

5 Sites Where You Can Download Free Title Blocks

Considering the information provided in the above sections, one can comfortably look for a free title block to download online. Below are 5 websites that offer free title blocks:

1. DWGfree

DWGfree website offers free title block templates for AutoCAD .DWG files to save engineers and designers from unnecessary work designing and configuring title blocks and rather concentrate on designing and drawing.

You can download, open, save, copy and edit any of the AutoCAD title blocks that are freely downloadable on this website.

You can use the search box to search for any title block template on this site.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What should be included in a title block?

You should include the following information in your title block:

  • Title of the project (drawing that appears on the drawing sheet),
  • The designer’s name, the client’s name,
  • The address of the site to which the drawing is to be used, the drawing date,
  • The author’s name,
  • Checker’s name (mostly an engineer that checks and verified that the design is okay),
  • Revision information,
  • The sheet number,
  • The scale used for the drawing on the sheet,
  • Type of units used in dimensioning,
  • The components used in case the drawing is an assembly and the respective materials for the different components.

You can add any other information depending on what your organization or company requires.

2. What should you consider when creating a title block?

A good Title Block should have consistency in appearance and information and should allow the person using the sheet drawing to easily implement the information provided on the title block and drawing.

A CAD drawing provided to a machinist in a machine shop, for example, should have the dimensions, engineering tolerances, and type of units used in dimensioning well indicated to enable the machinist to properly machine the desired product/component.

3. How do you make a simple title block in AutoCAD?

There are two methods of making a title block in AutoCAD. One is by creating your own title block right from scratch and saving it as a template for future reference and the other by using any preexisting title block template. for purposes of making a simple title block in AutoCAD, you can use the preexisting templates. AutoCAD comes with several templates that cut across different fields.

To start click the AutoCAD logo in the top left corner of your screen and click on New in the drop-down menu that opens. A box will open in the center of the screen titled ‘Select Template’. Choose the template that you feel best fits your project.

When done,  go over to the Model Tab by clicking the Model tab at the bottom left corner of the screen and make whichever drawing or model you want. After you finish making your drawing in the model tab, go to your Layout view and open the Layout tab in the Ribbon, and in the ‘Layout Viewports’ panel, click ‘Rectangular’. You should see a clear layout page (it could have grids depending on your AutoCAD settings) with a title block at the bottom right corner.

Click and drag to create a Viewport so that you have a model on your layout page. To edit the properties of the title block, click the AutoCAD logo at the top-left of your screen, then click ‘Drawing Utilities’, and finally click ‘Drawing Properties.’

Now go ahead and complete the properties that are relevant to your drawing.

4. What is the standard title block format?

There are two title block formats used in CAD and they include:

  • A CAD block that is placed within the drawing sheet file
  • An xreffed file

The most commonly used format is the CAD block and it is placed at the bottom right corner of a sheet as a table.

An xreffed file is a file that refers to another CAD file containing information about a specific drawing. It is commonly referred to as an XRef, external reference, or block reference file. And it is possible to XRef a CAD file that also XRef another CAD drawing.

5. What is the best title block size to use?

Title blocks may just occupy a box corner on the bottom right corner of the drawing sheet though at times they tend to extend along the right edge of the drawing sheet depending on the amount of information it contains. As a result, when placing CAD drawing on drawing sheets, designers and engineers should ensure they leave enough room on the right side to accommodate the title block.

Though some templates may not include a border that extends around the four edges of the drawing sheet, a good title block template should include a border. The border helps in ensuring that the paper prints are properly printed without the drawing becoming bound out of alignment. Therefore, it is important to keep this in consideration even when looking for free title blocks to download.

The other thing to consider is the size of the title block. Generally, title blocks come in three different categories depending on their sizes determined by the different CAD drawing sizes. These categories include:

i.  Title Blocks used for A, B, C, and G size drawings

Black and white Title blocks used for a, b, c, and g size drawings

6. How do you insert a drawing border with a title block?

To insert a drawing border with a title block in AutoCAD, for example, open up a blank drawing and click on the “Layout” tab in the bottom left corner. Then Right-click on “Layout 1” and select “Page Setup Manager.”

Then click “Modify” after which a pop-up window should appear. The most important thing to pay attention to in the pop-up window is the paper size that you intend to use. By default, the paper size is set at (8.5 x 11 inches), so be sure to set it up so that it matches the size of the Title Block template.

Then select “Landscape” on the Drawing Orientation panel and click “OK”.

Now click on the “Insert” tab and then click the “Insert” button on the far left side. From the pop-up menu, click on “Browse” and select your template. You should leave all the check boxes as they are apart from checking the “Specify on-screen” box after which you should click “OK.”

Drag to position the Title Block and left-click to put it in place once you are certain it is where you want it to be. You should take note of the dashed line since it represents the print border; you should position the Title Block within it.

Conclusion

You do not have to draw title blocks from scratch when putting your CAD drawing in drawing sheets for presentation or printing. There are hundreds if not thousands of free title blocks that you can download online, especially from the websites that we have highlighted in the above section.

Downloading free Title Block Templates saves you time and ensures that you use standard title block formats recognized worldwide since most of the available title blocks are designed in standard formats.

In the course of design, designers sometimes download 3D CAD models for use in their designs.

You may wonder why there is a need to download a model when you can just design it using the program. Well, these models save you a lot of design time and stress needed to make designs from scratch. Take for example, an architectural designer designing a building. Instead of having to design minor properties like doors and furniture, they can just download and face the main structural and architectural design. Also, with a program as complex as CATIA, beginners would surely have a hard time getting a grip of creating complex designs, and so may need a sample model for reference and practice.

There are a lot of websites online where you can find CATIA 3D models for free or for sale. In this article, we would be listing 13 sites with free CATIA models for downloads. The models are in CATPart, CATProduct, and other native file formats in CATIA. You should note that this article is not a comparison article, and so the websites are not listed in any order.

13 Sites with Free Vectorworks Objects https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/free-vectorworks-objects/ Tue, 29 Oct 2019 10:29:12 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=38335 Here at Scan2CAD, we’ve sung the praises of Vectorworks in many an article. It’s a great BIM and CAD program despite not being as prominent as some of the other BIM giants out there and is undeniably one of the best modeling solutions out there.

One thing that makes life much more efficient when using the software is the utilization of ready-made objects. It’s akin to groups in Sketchup or families in Revit – Vectorworks objects cut the time out of detailing generic objects like wall types or placeholder furniture.

Now, the different Vectorworks packages already come with a large library of objects you can use. However, what happens if you just want that specific 3-panel accordion door and you just can’t seem to find it anywhere. Do you model it yourself? No need for that because we here at Scan2CAD have you covered.

Here are 13 websites that have free Vectorworks objects you can download. You’ll see some options in the list that are specifically for Vectorworks, but also some websites that offer 3D CAD blocks or downloadable SketchUp models that can readily be imported into Vectorworks.

Sketchfab

Sketchup website screenshot

Sketchup website Source

Sketchfab is a community-driven repository for 3D models. It’s geared towards 3D model creators and those looking to download 3D models. Membership is required for you to upload and download 3D models. Now, the site has free and paid membership options, with lots of extra goodies available for those with the premium membership, but there are plenty of downloads that you can get for free if you’re on a budget.

Sketchfab was the brainchild of Alban Denoyel, Cédric Pinson, and Pierre-Antoine Passet from France. Their inception of this site back in 2012 was the result of their collective frustration on the lack of online venues for 3D modelers to submit and display their work.

Modlar

Modlar website screenshot

Modlar website Source

Modlar is marketed as a site geared towards connecting architects and product suppliers. As a way for that to happen, the site hosts tons of manufacturer-supplied 3D models and objects that architects can choose to download and import into their BIM software. As such, it’s a great place to get 3D models and Vectorworks objects when you have a specific brand or supplier in mind.

It was founded by architecture and construction professionals who understand the difficulty of specifying and finding building product suppliers firsthand. Their aim was to create an online platform that modernizes product discovery. So not only do they have information and available models for thousands of building products, but the site also features up-to-date industry news and interviews to help keep designer visitors of the site informed and in the know.

NBS National BIM Library

NBS Library website screenshot

NBS Library website Source

The NBS National BIM Library is one of the top BIM model libraries in the UK, with thousands of available BIM objects. The online library has all a Vectorworks modeler would need – from generic BIM objects to manufacturer-specific products. An added bonus would be that all of the objects found on the site meet NBS BIM Object standards.

The NBS – National Building Specification – is a UK-based design and engineering specification system used in architecture and other building professions to describe and specify building materials, standards, and quality of work. It was launched back in 1973 and used by thousands of offices in the UK. From its inception until mid-2018, NBS was owned by the Royal Institute of British Architects but has since been sold to the private equity arm of Lloyds Bank.

We’re going to start off our list with Free3D. The site itself comes with a pretty sleek interface—with easy navigation and well-categorized subsections. So, what exactly is on offer? Free3D offers CAD enthusiasts and professionals the chance to get their hands on a whopping 16,786 models. One of the biggest advantages of the site is that it enables users to filter out models by their product of choice, including Blender, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max, Maya, and so on.

With countless categories—from Architecture to Characters to Furniture—the site makes it incredibly easy to find what you’re looking for. It even allows you to filter out models by labels that include: Animated, Lowpoly, 3D Printable, and Rigged. Underneath the preview image for each model, you can see which file format it’s available in, e.g. .obj or .max. Once you select a model, you can look at specifications (like geometry and textures), product descriptions, and tags. If a model is available in more than one file format, you’ll have the option to pick from a list of file types. This is pretty handy if you find yourself modeling in more than one CAD software package.

With Free3D, you can start downloading 3D models straight away—you don’t even need to register an account! The site also comes with premium 3D models, if you’re open to parting with a few dollars here and there.

When you click download, you’ll be able to choose from a list of file type options.

To start your journey, you have to register an account with Autodesk. Given how many models are on offer, and how extensive Autodesk’s community is, it’s not exactly a big ask. If you like creating your own models, it’s also a handy way of receiving proper critique from your peers.

8. Sketchfab

Screenshot of Sketchfab

Sketchfab.com website supports the following file types: .blend, .dae, .fbx, . gltf, .obj, .stl and much more

Sketchfab is the next top resource for 3D models on our list. With an ultra-modern and interactive site design, it’s easy to see how the site managed to build up such a large community of creators. Sketchfab offers a wide assortment of both free and premium 3D models. The benefit to having such a large user base is that the list of 3D models on offer is constantly growing—you can even add to it by uploading your own models!

If you like what you see, you can even share or embed models with your friends or colleagues.

To get started with downloading models from Sketchfab, you’ll have to create an account. Once you’ve done so, you can take advantage of the countless models on offer and even sell your own 3D models!

9. CGTrader

Screenshot of CGTrader

CGTrader.com supports the following file types: .3ds, .c4d, .blend, .dae, .fbx, .flt, .lwo, .ma, ,.max, .mb, .mxs, .obj, .stl, .wrl and much more

Next on the list is CGTrader—a sleek site offering a huge range of professional 3D models for a variety of design projects like VR, AR, architecture, and animation. As with others on our list, the site offers both free and paid models. Altogether, you’re looking at a staggering 730,000 3D models! You can take advantage of general 3D models, or refine your search by 3D Printing, PBR, VR, Scanned 3D Models, and so on.

CGTrader has a slightly odd quirk—even after selecting ‘Free’ models, you’ll still see Premium models on the list. Fortunately, prices are very clearly signposted, so there’s no chance of you accidentally clicking on a model that comes with a price tag. With a variety of categories—including Aircraft, Exterior, Character, and so on—you can quickly refine your search. It’s also possible to specify file formats you’d prefer, poly-count and license. If you hover over a model, you can get a quick preview of what’s on offer. Once you select one, you can scroll through different images and videos, read product descriptions and look at other similar 3D models at the bottom.

To get started on CGTrader, you’ll have to register an account. If you enjoy interacting with other CAD users and designers, it’s not a bad deal.

10. Free 3D Base

Screenshot of Free 3D Base

File types supported by Free 3D Base include: .3ds, .dwg, .dxf, .obj

Free 3D Base is next on our list, a site offering professional 3D models to architects, graphic artists, and designers. Basic in design, the site’s offering of 1,825 models might seem insubstantial compared to other sites on our list, but there’s still plenty to trawl through. And with it being free, you’ve not exactly got anything to lose in trying it out.

Things are kept pretty simple with Free 3D Base. You can search directly for a product name or choose a specific manufacturer. Alternatively, you can make use of the category list on the right-clicking on one that will lead you to further sub-categories, e.g Furniture > Living Room Furniture > Chairs and Stools. If you’re just browsing, you can check out the latest featured models on the carousel at the top of the page. Hovering your mouse over a model will give you a better preview. When you click, you’ll get to see information ranging from dimensions to format to the manufacturer. A fun feature is the inclusion of manufacturer websites, so you can get a look at the model in real life.

Whilst there’s not as much on offer here at Free 3D Base, the site makes up for it by allowing users to download without having to register an account. In fact, as soon as you click download, you’ll get a zip folder containing your model in varying file formats.

11. Syncronia

Screenshot of Syncronia

Syncronia.com website supports the following file types: .3ds, .dwg, .fbx, .jpeg, .jpg, .mat, .max, .obj, .rfa, .rvt

The next site on our list is on a completely different scale from the other featured websites. Syncronia is a resource that specifically caters to professionals in AEC and design. The site offers a range of 3D models, BIM objects, catalogs, and libraries—listing them by the supplier, manufacturer, and specifications. While it can take a few minutes to get to grips with the site, it’s incredibly handy for those who work in architecture or interior design.

To start, you can select 3D Models from File Type—other options on this list include BIM Objects, 3D Textures, and Catalogues. You can then refine your search by specifying a product category (Appliances, Bar Furniture, Ceiling Lamps), the manufacturer (Alessi, B&B Italia, ITLAS), and file format. The category list is incredibly detailed and precise, including further sub-categories to make your search easier, e.g. Furniture > Sofa and Armchairs > Pouf. The models listed will each come with a preview image and a logo in the bottom-right telling you which manufacturer it belongs to. Once you select one, you’ll be able to read a product description, get specifications and even see who the designers are.

If you’re looking to take your designs to the next level, Syncronia could be your next port of call. To get started, however, you’ll have to register an account. With all that’s on offer—models, catalogs, specifications—it’s definitely worth it!

12. AEC Data

Screenshot of AEC Data

AEC Data supports the following file types: .3ds, .aco, .dwg, .dxf, .gsm, .ifc, .max .o2c, .obj, .skp, .rfa, .wrl and much more

The penultimate site on our list is rather specialist, resting in the same vein as Syncronia. AEC-DATA targets architects, planners, and interior designers with a range of 3D models—connecting them to suppliers, manufacturers, and design contractors. AEC-DATA has 35,232 3D models on offer—in a wide range of file type formats—all absolutely free!

You can refine your search by using AEC-DATA’s many categories or filter options. If you’re working with a specific CAD product, you can look for models by file type, e.g. DWG 3D, SKP, and MAX. You can also search by specific brand (Eden CZ, Novatronic, Ravak) or by application (Bathroom Facilities, Office Equipment, Home Furniture). When you see something you like, it’s as simple as clicking. You’ll then be able to look at the information that includes 3D model type, dimensions, IFC parameters, and much more. There will be a table listing the many file type options on offer, not to mention texture downloads underneath.

One of the biggest selling points of AEC-DATA is that you don’t have to even register an account to start downloading models—you just need to click download and off you go!

13. TraceParts

Screenshot of TraceParts

TraceParts.com website supports the following file types: .dwg, .dxf, .iges,.jt, .sat, .step, .stl, .vrml and much more

Our last choice on our free 3D CAD models lists shares similarities with both Syncronia and AEC-DATA. TraceParts, as the name suggests, is a design library that enables designers, CAD professionals, and engineers to essentially trace parts. The site offers hundreds of supplier catalogs, over 100 million CAD models—3D and 2D—and product datasheets to aid in design, manufacturing, and maintenance processes. As with Syncronia, it can take a bit of trial and error to get used to finding your way around, but it’s definitely worth it!

How you start your search is entirely up to you. You can opt for searching through the 690 manufacturer catalogs on offer. Alternatively, you can search for the parts you need by sector, e.g. Mechanical Components, Manufacturing Engineering or Civil Engineering. Once you select a sector, you can look at sub-classifications and refine by supplier, standards organization, or standards. If a part catches your eye, click on it and you’ll get to see 3D renders, manufacturer names, and part numbers. If you scroll down, you’ll even be able to specify aspects like load capacity and weight. And with a list of chosen software packages to choose from—including SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD—you can be sure your model will be compatible with what you’re working with.

To get started with TraceParts, you’ll need to create an account. With the sheer number of models and parts on offer, it’s worth checking out.

13 Sites with Free CAD Blocks https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/free-cad-blocks/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/free-cad-blocks/#comments Fri, 20 Jul 2018 10:26:46 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=28818 Whether you’re a CAD hobbyist or a professional, you’ll know that creating 2D and 3D designs can often be a time-consuming process. Those who are keen on increasing their productivity and creating quality designs often make use of CAD blocks. Blocks are a collection of vector designs grouped together to form a single entity. They are often used in AutoCAD, but can be compatible with other software. Not sure where to look for free CAD block downloads? Don’t worry: as always, the Scan2CAD team is here to help.

We’ve put together a list of 13 websites that offer free CAD blocks so you don’t have to fork out a single penny! Our options span popular CAD software such as AutoCAD and SketchUp, and fields including architecture and interior design. With such choice on offer, you’re sure to find something that will suit your needs! You can also used these free CAD blocks using the range of free CAD software that’s available.

13 Sites with Free CAD Blocks

1. Cad-blocks.net

Screenshot of categories on cad-blocks.net

We’ll start our list with cad-blocks.net. With this site, what you see is what you get. While the site itself isn’t that sleek or modern, it doesn’t take away from how useful it is as a resource for free blocks. So, what’s on offer? Thousands of DWG files for use in AutoCAD and other popular architecture. Knowing that compatibility can be an issue for users with older software versions, cad-blocks has made it clear that all blocks are compatible with AutoCAD 2004 to the latest release.

Not only are the blocks here free to download, but another great advantage is that registration isn’t required. Blocks are sorted into collection categories that include furniture, vegetation, kitchen equipment, and signals, amongst many others. When you select a collection, e.g., vegetation, you’ll be met with further sub-sections like color trees, trees elevation, and so on. If you like the look of tree plan CAD blocks, for example, it’s as simple as clicking “download”. Then, in no time at all, you’ll have 427 CAD blocks at your disposal.

It’s safe to say that, given the thorough nature of cad-blocks, you’ll find something that catches your fancy. And, with its handy previews, you can see everything on offer with each block download without having to wait until you actually download.

2. Cad-block.com

Screenshot of cad-block.com homepage

Next on our list is the similarly named cad-block.com. This resource offers architects, engineers and designers a way to find new and high-quality projects and models. We’d like to remind users, however, that many of the sites on our list—cad-block.com included—contain blocks that are uploaded by other users. This means you might encounter issues with varying units, scales and so on. To work with the blocks on offer, cad-block recommends you use AutoCAD 2007 and later. If using an earlier version of AutoCAD, you may experience issues with file compatibility. As with the previous entry on our list, you don’t have to make an account to take advantage of what’s on offer here.

Cad-block offers a wide variety of free blocks and premium blocks (which as the name suggests, come with a price tag). At the top of the page, you’ll be able to select CAD Blocks or Premium Models. If you’re not interested in paying, CAD Blocks is your destination. Be aware, however, that the page includes free and paid blocks. There’s no way to filter it to only show free CAD block downloads. Fortunately, if the block comes with a price, there will be a bright green tag in the corner. The list on right allows you to sort through categories, from appliances to interiors to lighting. It couldn’t be simpler to download—one click and you’re ready to go.

While it’s slightly annoying to have both free and paid blocks on the same page, we can’t find many other faults with cad-block. We particularly like that, when you select a block collection to download, you’ll be able to see similar blocks and drawings underneath—previews and all. And, if you’re interested in joining a community, you’ll be pleased to hear that cad-block allows users to upload their own blocks and share with other users.

3. Cadblocksfree.com

Screenshot of cadblocksfree homepage

Cadblocksfree.com is yet another online CAD library filled with a huge variety of both 2D and 3D models. As with our second pick, cadblocksfree comes with both free blocks and a selection of paid, premium models. For those interested in the paid block collections, they offer three membership plans that cover 1 month, 6 months and 12 months. If you don’t want to pay for a membership, that’s fine—you don’t even need to register to download any of the models.

The site firmly separates 2D and 3D models into two different pages. If you head to either page, you can look at only free blocks by selecting $0.00-$0.00 from the filter options. There’s a lot on offer here, with 1,828 free 2D blocks and 3,483 free 3D blocks. As with other sites offering blocks, cadblocksfree has a category list on the left-hand side that includes categories like doors, furniture and transport. If you select a category, e.g., architectural, you’ll be met with further subcategories like fireplaces or fences. All blocks on offer will be available in a preview before you so much as select them. And once one’s caught your eye, you’ll have it downloaded in a couple of mere clicks.

If you like creating your own blocks, you’ll be pleased to know that cadblocksfree gives users the opportunity to upload and even sell their own models. You will, of course, have to set up your own account to so. And that’s not all. The site also comes with its own forum, where users can discuss and share AutoCAD tips and tricks!

4. Cad-blocks.co.uk

Screenshot of cadblocks homepage

If you’re not interested in forking out a single penny for blocks, you’ll be pleased to find that cad-blocks.co.uk offers only free CAD blocks. That means you don’t have to bother having to filter between paid and free blocks. What’s more, registration isn’t required—you could be downloading CAD blocks in mere seconds. All blocks available on site are in AutoCAD 2000 format, so compatibility shouldn’t be a problem. They have all been processed to ensure they’re free from errors and where possible, all CAD data is to scale.

To start off your journey into free CAD block downloads, all you’ve got to do is head to the Downloads page. By default, you’ll be brought straight to the first category—Aircraft. From the carousel at the top, however, you can browse through all other categories on offer, from road signs to building elements to drawing symbols. Each category contains previews of the blocks on offer. If you’re interested in one, simply click on it and you’ll be sent to a page where you can directly download it. Overall, there appears to be a decent selection of various blocks.

For those that are looking for something more, cad-blocks has the perfect offer: you can download the site’s entire block collection for £19.99. All you’ve got to do is provide an email address and a one-off payment of £19.99, and you’ll gain access to 3,111 blocks! Now, that’s a tempting offer!

5. BIMobject

Screenshot of BIMobject object list

Our next choice is slightly different to those mentioned so far in that, while it has a large collection of 2D models, BIMobject mainly specializes in 3D objects. A particularly noteworthy mention is that these 3D objects are available in a range of formats including Revit, Allplan and 3DS. Unlike the sites listed above, BIM Object does require you to set up an account in order to start taking advantage of what’s on offer. However, with 327,383 parametric BIM objects and 27,865,027 products available, there are plenty of reasons to sign up!

Even at a quick glance, it’s clear that BIM Object is different to the rest—its site is sleek and accessible. With such a large collection on offer, however, it will take you a while to filter through everything to find what you’re looking for. To start, you’ll see small logos at the top to help you navigate straight to category pages ranging from construction to electronics to signage. Additionally, you’ll be able to filter products via brands, BIM object categories and file types. Each category comes with further subcategories, e.g. construction > access doors and panels. From there, you can look through previews of each block. Once you’re a member, you’ll be able to download at the click of a few buttons.

The site offers BIMobject apps for SketchUp, Revit, ARCHICAD and AutoCAD. The apps integrate the BIMobject Cloud into your chosen software so you can browse, filter and download objects into your project without switching between browsers. If you’re looking to speed up your workflow, it’s certainly worth considering.

6. Bibliocad

Screenshot of Bibliocad library

Our next choice is Bibliocad—a site that offers CAD and BIM resources for architecture, design and construction. As with the last few sites we’ve mentioned, the site offers a range of both free and paid blocks. In order to download anything from the site, you will have to register. There are two subscription plans on offer: a free account or a premium one. With the free account, you’ll be limited to free files only and up to 20 downloads per day. With a premium account, however, you’ll get premium files and up to 200 downloads per day! If you’re going to be using the site frequently, it’s certainly worth pursuing the Premium account.

There’s definitely a wide range of file types available on Bibliocad—including PAT, PSM, RVT, MAX and DWG. The library itself has 114,536 blocks. Unfortunately, as with cad-block.com, both paid and free blocks are displayed on the same page. You’ll be able to tell the difference between the two, however, because free blocks have a bright green flag in the bottom left-hand corner. When scouring your way through the library, you’ll be able to take advantage of the categories list on the left-hand side, including bathrooms, calculations, electronic and furniture. The only filter options available are most viewed, most recent, relevance and most downloaded.

With the lack of filter option for free/paid blocks, it might take you a little while to make you through all that Bibliocad has to offer. An issue many users have struggled with previously is that many of the blocks available have been submitted by various providers—while each block is processed, there can still be major differences in format, scale and units.

7. Cad-corner

Screenshot of example block from cad-corner

At first glance, cad-corner looks far more basic than all sites listed so far. While the site is extremely simple in design, that doesn’t mean you should discount it from your new list of block resources. Indeed, the site provides a wide variety of AutoCAD blocks that will take your designs to the next level. All blocks provided have been created or updated with AutoCAD 2006. So, if you’re using an earlier version of AutoCAD, they recommend downloading the Autodesk Batch converter or SolidWorks DWGgateway to sort out compatibility issues.

The categories available are displayed in a very simple list—so, you won’t have much trouble trying to locate what you’re looking for. The list includes architectural blocks, mechanical blocks and miscellaneous. If you select a category, e.g., mechanical blocks, you’ll see further subcategories like flow charts. Once you select a subcategory, you’ll have a list of available blocks to download. Unfortunately, some blocks have previews and others don’t. So, essentially, you might not know what a block will look like until after you’ve downloaded it.

Cad-corner certainly isn’t as accessible as other sites on offer—we’d definitely like to see a tile preview of all the blocks on offer. That being said, you don’t have to register in order to download anything, so it’s not like you’re losing out.

8. Draftsperson

Screenshot of draftsperson homepage

Draftsperson is very similar to cad-corner. In other words, it’s pretty basic. It’s set out in a similar format—offering lists of subcategories and pages instead of a more accessible search option. The site offers a nice variety of free blocks and symbols, all saved in an AutoCAD 2000 format. They’ve made it clear that each free CAD block download has been carefully screened for the educational stamp. And any blocks you do download are on layer 0, bylock or bylayer and insert at 0,0,0. Additionally, A PURGE and AUDIT have been run on each block.

To start, there are main categories which all have lists of relevant subcategories and pages—including fixtures, people and animals, and civil. When you click on a page, e.g., people and animal > animals, you’ll see a small selection of available blocks. Fortunately, they offer previews, so you know what you’re downloading. As soon as you see something you like, it’s as simple as clicking on the drawing to download. Then, you’ll get a zip folder containing your new DWG.

As with cad-corner, Draftsperson is basic—its collection isn’t as extensive as other resources we’ve listed. That being said, there are definitely a few diamonds hiding in the rough, so be sure to look through it thoroughly!

9. DWG Models

Screenshot of DWG models catalog

DWG Models offers a huge DWG file library for architects, designers, engineers and draftsmen. After looking at the previous two sites, you’ll be pleased to see DWG Models is much more modern and sleek with its site interface. The database contains drawings, assemblies, diagrams, symbols and much more. Needless to say, there’s something for everyone. All files on offer are compatible with an AutoCAD platform, so you don’t need to worry. You don’t even need to register—it’s that simple!

DWG Models has an entire page dedicated to free blocks—its premium models are available on the Buy page. You’ll find a nice range of categories listed on the left-hand side, ranging from architectural details to landscaping to urban planning. Some categories contain further subcategories, e.g., interiors > equipment. If you’re not sure a block is free, all you’ve got to do is look for the bright green label in the bottom left-hand corner labelled “free”. Once you’ve got a block in mind, all you’ve got to do is click download and you’re sorted!

While registration isn’t required, DWG Models does recommend signing up if you’re a frequent user. Having an account will give you the ability to view DWG files more easily. In all, there seems to be a lot to sift through. And if it’s not enough, you’ve always got the premium blocks to look at!

10. CADdetails

Screenshot of CADdetails homepage

CADdetails is on an entirely different level to the sites we’ve listed previously. Why? Because they offer manufacturer-specific building product information and content for AEC professionals. On the site, you’ll be able to find high-quality CAD drawings, 3D models and BIM files. Whilst all content is available for download free of charge, you will need to register in order to download anything. With access to thousands of design and planning documents for commercial and residential building projects, however, we’re sure taking a few minutes to register is worth it.

To start, you can head to either CAD drawings or BIM models. There, you’ll be able to use a category list on the left-hand side to sort through what’s on offer—from technical documents to site products to speciality products. Once you’ve selected a category, e.g., technical documents, you’ll gain access to further subcategories like specifications. You can then select a manufacturer—like AGF Manufacturing—after which, you’ll see a list of available blocks. Simply hover over an item to see a preview. Once you’re a registered user, you can download files in mere seconds.

With 51,814 drawings available in CAD drawings and 10,452 in BIM, it’s safe to say you’ll be quite busy trying to make your way through what’s on offer. We’re definitely fans of the category and filter options—it makes searching for relevant blocks that much easier. Additionally, the option to mark products as favorites for future reference is certainly advantageous.

11. Syncronia

Screenshot of Syncronia 3D models

Syncronia is much like CADdetails in that is far more specialist in what it offers—specifically targeting architecture and design professionals. It gives users the opportunity to download 3D models, BIM objects and 3D libraries of surfaces, catalogues and specifications. The site also lists models by suppliers and manufacturers, so it might take you a while to get to grips with finding blocks you’re interested in. If you work in architecture or interior design, however, the learning curve is most definitely worth it.

Syncronia works in collaboration with Autodesk, so it’s of no surprise to find free downloads in a variety of formats including Revit, 3DS Max and AutoCAD. There’s a nice variety of filter options available, including product category, manufacturers, file type and keyword. Additionally, you’ll find a category list on the left: from bathroom to installations to doors and windows. You can even specify texture! In order to download anything that’s caught your eye, however, you will need to register. This could work in your favor, as registering will enable you to create a profile and publish your own projects.

Syncronia is definitely on a whole different level—not only can you download 3D models, you can also look at catalogs, technical information, specifications and get in touch with manufacturers directly. And if you’re interested, they’ve got their own projects page and magazine.

12. Allcadblocks (formerly Boss888)

Screenshot of Boss888 homepage

The penultimate site on our list is Allcadblocks.com (formerly Boss888, now a Chinese website) a site that offers users a range of architectural and interior design blocks. All designs available on the site are saved in an AutoCAD 2000 format, so, compatibility shouldn’t be an issue for most users. Boss888 have made it clear that they frequently update their libraries with new designs, which is always a sign of a good resource. While you don’t have to register to download anything, it might be worth considering if you’re going to use it frequently.

As with other sites, there are both free and paid blocks on offer. There are 410 free CAD block downloads available. Bear in mind that these aren’t individual designs—they’re typically grouped together in collections, so you do get quite a lot. You can sort through the free collection by price, popularity and newness. On the right-hand side, you’ll find a list of product categories. Now, here’s where the site lets itself down. When you click on any category with “free” in its title, you’ll get all of the site’s blocks—not just the free ones. While this is frustrating, all you’ve got to do is sort the page by lowest price to view all of the free blocks first.

While Allcadblocks (Boss888) isn’t the most sleek and accessible site available, you get exactly what you expect: free blocks. With a modest selection of 410 block collections, it’s certainly not too shabby!

13. First In Architecture

Screenshot of First in Architecture blocks

Our last choice on our free CAD blocks list is slightly different from the others. That is, it’s not a site dedicated entirely to blocks. First In Architecture is a go-to resource for anyone looking for tools, tutorials and tips for architecture. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hobbyist or a professional—they’ll have something that will help. If you’re looking for free CAD blocks downloads, they’ve got an entire page dedicated to new blocks.

The CAD Blocks page is laid out like a blog—you’ll find a list of separate posts dedicated to a new set of blocks. Some of the blocks released are provided by other sites like CADdetails, as First In Architecture is keen on promoting all types of blocks they think their users might be interested in. Additionally, they provide their own range of blocks—frequently updated to keep up with user interest. You can search for blocks in different categories including: accessibility, bathroom, construction elements and landscaping.

While the site isn’t dedicated entirely to free blocks, it’s still a great resource to bookmark. We especially appreciate that they tell users to get in touch if they’d like to make a request. It gives the site a more personal feel.

14 Top Free CAD Packages to Download https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/14-top-free-cad-packages/ https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/cad/14-top-free-cad-packages/#comments Thu, 05 Jan 2017 13:40:51 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=18293 Anyone who has worked with CAD will know just how integral the software is to various industries—ranging from architecture, to engineering and even gaming. CAD gives us the ability to create designs for a range of purposes, from electrical drawings to house plans. This high demand, however, has meant that professional CAD software has become very expensive—particularly for those who just enjoy CAD as a hobby, and therefore don’t want to commit to an expensive package (for instance, this is how much AutoCAD costs).

With that in mind, Scan2CAD has created a list of the top 14 CAD freeware packages, so you can enjoy CAD without having to spend a single penny. We’ve included operating systems, supported file types and even a list of extra packages that didn’t quite make the list. Read on…

We’ve separated this list into two sections:

Free 2D Drafting Software

We begin our list with some of the most popular and free options for 2D drafting. If you’re new to CAD, you probably want to start here.

1. DraftSight

Screenshot of DraftSight

Draftsight used to be a proprietary freeware 2D CAD software until December 31, 2019, when its developer, Dassault Systèmes, put an end to all free versions of the software. Still, Draftsight is available for free for a 30-day trial period. Upon the elapse of the free trial, you will have to choose among three main pricing plans:

  • DraftSight Professional at $249/year
  • DraftSight Premium at $599/year
  • DraftSight Enterprise (pricing available on inquiry)

Other than the change that effectively ended the software’s freeware status, DraftSight is still a 2D CAD design solution. However, the DraftSight Premium package unlocks full 3D capabilities and parametric constraints.

Generally, DraftSight is a professional 2D design and drafting program that lets you create, edit, view, and markup any kind of 2D drawing (or 3D file). It’s a rather simple and minimal program, so it’s easy to make the transition from another type of CAD application to DraftSight. The only requirement to use the program is to activate it via an email address. This CAD program does have an AutoCAD feel to it—in fact, it even uses AutoCAD’s native file format DWG.

It comes with a range of drafting tools that make it the best-in-class 2D CAD program. It has a number of vector entities available, including lines and polylines, dimensions, layering capabilities, and text. Additionally, it enhances collaboration by providing access to Dassault Systèmes’ 3DExperience platform.

5. SketchUp Make and SketchUp Web App

Screenshot of SketchUp Make

SketchUp Make is the free open-source 3D modeling version of the popular SketchUp software. However, Trimble, the developers of SketchUp, discontinued the free offering, with the last version of the software being SketchUp Make 2017. As at the time of updating this article, in 2022, the company had also stopped offering the ability to officially download SketchUp Make 2017, although it supported it as of early 2021. The move, the official website explains, was motivated by the fact that the last free version is outdated. This made it vulnerable to security issues that may arise from the outdated open-source libraries.

In this regard, if you want to enjoy the perks of the freeware, you have to download it from third-party websites, which may or may not be safe. But, as we’ll detail shortly, an alternative exists. Firstly though, what is SketchUp Make 2017?

SketchUp Make 2017 covers a range of applications such as architecture, interior design, civil engineering, and even video game design. It comes with an open-source library of models and a 3D warehouse which is the world’s biggest library of free 3D models. The software is incredibly easy to use, and the SketchUp website provides extra help with tutorials and videos. You can even customize your SketchUp with extensions or by upgrading to SketchUp Pro. If you’re interested in creating more advanced projects, you will have to upgrade to the Pro version, which gives you access to features like simulated film cameras and solid modeling tools.

If you are not ready to jeopardize your computer’s security by downloading the outdated SketchUp Make 2017, you can opt for another free offering from Trimble. The developer offers SketchUp for Web at absolutely no cost. However, you first have to create an account/sign-in in order to use it. After that, you can operate SketchUp Web App using any operating system, computer, smartphone, or browser. It offers numerous drawing and editing tools such as line, arc, move, paint, rotate (orbit), erase, measure, etc.

OnShape is a force to reckon with when it comes to making 3D modeling more accessible to the masses.  If you’re not new to CAD, you’ve probably heard of the leading 3D modeling CAD software, SolidWorks, OnShape was started by SolidWorks CEOs Jon Hirschtick and John McEleney, plus their founding team, and they continue to carry the torch of SolidWorks’ innovation and quality.

OnShape is unique to many other options in that it runs in your web browser. But don’t be fooled into thinking a browser-based solution is limited. The software boasts a list of enterprise-level manufacturing companies as users, so if their features are enough for these companies, it will likely be enough for most entry-level users.

Although OnShape offers a premium solution, they also offer a free plan with limited features. The free plan, Onshape for Education, is available to students and educators. To use it, you have to create an Onshape Education account. This account offers professional 3D CAD features accessible using any device, with the data generated throughout its usage being saved in the cloud. The supported features include mobile editing, part, and assembly modeling, surfacing and sheet metal, real-time collaboration, markups, bill of materials, exploded views, infinite restore and undo, and collaboration through the real-time chat feature, just to mention a few.

7. FreeCAD

Screenshot of FreeCAD

FreeCAD is a 100% open-sourced 3D parametric modeler. It’s predominantly aimed at mechanical engineering and product design users because its features are adapted to mechanical engineering. Some of these features include modern finite element analysis (FEA) tools, CNC/CAM workbenches, robot simulation, and experimental computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Still, it can be used by professionals in the architecture field. To back this up, FreeCAD offers dedicated building information management (BIM).

The software enables users to design real-life objects regardless of their perceived size. What makes the software pretty handy is the fact that you can easily edit your drawing by entering your model history and modifying some of its components. This makes it similar to the latest versions of AutoCAD, which support version history.

As a 3D modeler, FreeCAD can be used by anyone interested in creating 3D models – in fact, you don’t even need to have had any CAD experience to use the program comfortably. As with other 3D modelers, FreeCAD does come with 2D components – it allows you to sketch 2D shapes that you can then use as a base to create 3D objects. In this regard, direct 2D drawing is not its focus. Instead, it has a variety of features ranging from 3D solids and support for meshes to a robot simulation module that allows you to study robot movements. If you’re comfortable with SolidWorks, you’ll find FreeCAD easy to use.

Furthermore, being an open-source platform, FreeCAD allows you to contribute by helping fix bugs, update the documentation, or implement upgrades to the software.

8. Sweet Home 3D

Screenshot of Sweet Home 3D

Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application distributed under GNU General Public License. It gives users the chance to draw floor plans, arrange furniture, and look at the final results in 3D by following a simple three-step process.

First, in order to draw the floor plans, Sweet Home 3D requires you to import the vector version of a pre-existing drawing. This import acts as a template that you can then use to draw walls, place windows and doors, and add room floors. Any changes made to the 2D plan are simultaneously reflected in a 3D view, which is displayed within the software’s workspace.

Next, decorate and furnish the house. With Sweet Home 3D, you can add color and texture to the floors and walls as well as add furniture, import objects that are drawn using other 3D software – the software supports formats such as 3DS, DAE, OBJ, and KMZ – and customize the color and size of the imported objects.

The software lets you view the 3D model by taking a virtual tour or viewing the 2D design aerially. To make the 3D virtual tour even more realistic, you can set the time and orientation of the house relative to the sun’s position. This allows Sweet Home 3D to include shadows within the virtual tour. Finally, you can render the 2D drawing and 3D model as a photo or video before exporting it as an OBJ, SVG, PDF, or PNG file.

Sweet Home 3D is available for download as desktop software. You can also use it online with any WebGL browser.

TinkerCAD is a 3D design and 3D printing web application offered by software giant Autodesk. It bills itself as a “free online collection of software tools that help people all over the world think, create, and make.” It allows users to place a pre-existing or imported shape on a work plane. Placing a shape as a solid or hole enables you to respectively add or remove material to and from the shape you had originally added. With TinkerCAD, you can also adjust shapes by rotating or moving them, as well as combining shapes to create intricate 3D models.

In addition to creating the models, TinkerCAD supports all 3D printers. It also enables users to order 3D prints online from the platform’s 3D printing partners. Additionally, the software enables you to export a section of your model as an SVG file that you can then feed into a laser cutter.

Generally, TinkerCAD is used to create everything from toys and prototypes to home decor and even jewelry. It’s a web-based application, so no downloads are necessary. It’s predominantly used for simple projectsit comes with three basic tools to create basic shapes. Its biggest advantage is that it can create 3D models for immediate 3D printingwith its CSG (Constructive Solid Geometry) feature, you can get a 3D model in 10 minutes! Users can design models from scratch or use ready-made models. The application is limited however, as it cannot be used for complex projects.

3D Crafter is an intuitive, real-time 3D modeling and animation freeware program. It incorporates a drag-and-drop approach to 3D modeling, meaning you can drag an object created using another software to 3D Crafter’s interface. It can create complex models from simple 3D primitives or by using its shape-building tools. In addition, it provides modeling tools that allow users to paint, sculpt, and deform 3D shapes. But that’s not all.

The program can also be used to create animated scenes by simply placing shapes at various timestamps. The scenes can then be viewed in real-time and recorded to a video (AVI) file. It is designed to ensure that the animation you create runs smoothly. Generally, the free version of 3D Crafter offers features such as key-frame manipulation, standard skeletal animation bones, pipe engineer, scene details, and the ability to duplicate, normalize groups, shift the center on selection, reset animation position, and crease all shapes. Furthermore, the software supports multiple import and export formats.

Developed by Amabilis Software, the program also packs additional punches. For instance, you can use the tool roll-up groups feature to customize the program’s interface in such a way that only the tools and items you utilize most regularly are visible. This feature also allows you to access the less frequently used features by just clicking a single button. Whileit has many capabilities, you might need to upgrade to 3DCrafter Pro for more advanced features. The paid version is available for a one-time fee of $39.95, which is a fraction of the cost of animation software such as Autodesk Maya.

12. OpenSCAD

Screenshot of OpenSCAD

OpenSCAD is a 3D modeling CAD freeware platform released under the second version of the General Public License. Unlike most 3D modeling software, it doesn’t focus on the ‘artistic’ aspects of 3D modeling. Instead, it’s more suitable for creating 3D models of machine parts. It works as a 3D compiler that reads a script file that describes an object, rendering the file as a 3D model. In this regard, it does not feature an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) that is synonymous with conventional 3D modeling software.

The compiler-based approach accords the designer complete control over the modeling process. They can make changes on the fly as well as make designs that are designed by configurable parameters. OpenSCAD offers two primary modeling techniques: CSG and the ability to extrude 3D models from 2D outlines that are imported as DXF files.

However, while the software is very intuitive, it’s still too limited for complex projects—so you might have to go elsewhere if you want more advanced features. But its official website has an elaborate documentation section with written and video tutorials, user manuals, articles/blogs, and links to books on how to use OpenSCAD.

Honorable Mentions

There’s a huge variety of CAD freeware available, so there are many that didn’t make our final list—but that certainly doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t check them out! Take a look at our list below for even more free software applications to take advantage of:

As an added bonus, the following 3 picks are only free for students—but they include some of the most well-known programs on the market:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there a free AutoCAD version?

AutoCAD is the most popular CAD software around. Boasting plenty of features already packed into it, with Autodesk striving to introduce new features and tools every year, the software comes at a premium. But the value it offers users makes the investment worthwhile. That said, depending on your requirements, you can get AutoCAD for free. For example, the Autodesk Education & Student Access program allows educators and students to download and use AutoCAD for free. Alternatively, you can use the software for free during the free trial period. We have answered this question more elaborately in our article.

Is there a free SketchUp version?

Our discussion above explores SketchUp Make, Trimble’s freeware that has since been discontinued because it is outdated and, therefore, poses a security risk. That said, there is a free up-to-date SketchUp version: SketchUp Web App. But as the name suggests, it is not available as desktop software. To download and install a desktop version, you have to choose a paid tier. There are various paid SketchUp products and license options from which to choose. More on this in our roundup of SketchUp’s pricing model.

What is the best 2D drawing/drafting software for beginners?

LibreCAD offers an intuitive interface that is simple, organized, and easy to understand. This, coupled with the fact that it does not require the user to follow unnecessary procedures as is the case with QCAD – which requires users to delete some program files to use the free version – makes it ideal for beginners.

What is the best 3D modeling software for beginners?

SketchUp Web App. If you are starting out, you may not have a powerful computer that enables you to install certain software. You may not even have a computer in the first place. With SketchUp Web App, which is available for free, you can begin your 3D modeling journey on a less powerful computer or mobile phone. The application also has plenty of tools.

What is the best artistic 3D modeling software?

Blender. It offers a selection of powerful tools for free. According to the developer, VFX professionals even claim that the software’s motion tracking capability is probably the best in the market. Moreover, it outperforms other programs in this list by not reserving some features for paying users.

Parting Shot

Some of the set prices for popular CAD software may be off-putting to hobbyists and beginners. Fortunately, there are plenty of free alternatives designed to suit their needs and preferences. The freeware programs fall into a wide range of categories, including sculpting, CAM, 2D drafting, animation, 3D modeling, etc. And based on our discussion, each category has its standout solution. 3. My DXF

Screenshot of mydxf.blogspot.com

My DXF has a decent selection of free DXF designs available. The DXF ‘projects’ aren’t categorized the same way as the above sites—they’re grouped by specific keywords like ‘cowboy’ or ‘dolphin’. So you can either look through the entire list of keywords, or you can manually search through the entire selection. There’s around 600 DXF designs on offer, so there’s more than enough to take advantage of. When you download a design, you’re given a zip folder containing the DXF file.

4. Love SVG

 Screenshot of lovesvg.com

Love SVG offers both SVG and DXF designs, absolutely free. The designs consist of personal quotes with custom designs, which are frequently updated on a daily basis. These quotes are perfect for people who enjoy DIY projects and so forth. There’s over 600 designs to choose from, however there’s no categorization feature so you would have to look through the selection manually. When you download a design, you get a zip folder containing a PNG, SVG, DXF and EPS version of the design.

5. Ponoko

Screenshot of Ponoko website

Ponoko describe themselves as ‘The worlds’s easiest making system’ . Ponoko provide pre-made designs which you can have made by their network of creators. Many of the designs on the website are not free but they do have a small collection of free designs. 6. Vision Engravers

Screenshot of visionengravers.com

Vision Engravers has just under 100 free DXF clipart designs on offer. These designs are grouped by theme, e.g. ‘Christmas‘ or ‘Easter’. The site is updated regularly, so you’ll find the selection expanding with time. The site doesn’t have a categorization feature, so you will have to scroll through the clipart selection to look for anything that might interest you. The site’s true value comes with its variety of file types however. When you download a design, you’re given a zip folder containing an AI, CDL, EPS, JPG, PDF, PLT and DXF of the design. Needless to say, they give you plenty of options!

7. Sign Torch

Screenshot of signtorch.com

Sign Torch only has a small selection of around 35 free DXF designs available. While this might not seem like much, you might find the odd gem or two if you look hard enough. The site also offers cheap DXF design collections that won’t set you back too much—buying in bulk saves you money, and they run frequent discounts. The site doesn’t have a categorization feature, but with it being such a small selection, it won’t take you long to look through. As with Plasma Spider, you will have to create an account before you can download any files—but it will be useful in the long run. Forums are a great resource for learning and sharing.

13. DXF 1

Screenshot of the DXF1.com

DXF 1 also has a variety of free DXF designs available—all of which are CNC ready. These designs are all categorized into sections and subsections, e.g. ‘Animals’ and ‘Objects’. These categories are rather broad, so it might take a bit of browsing through them all manually to find anything you’re interested in. Some sections have more files than others, like ‘Icons’, but there’s still quite a range of designs to take advantage of. When you download a design you’re given a single DXF file.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget Pinterest

Screenshot of searching for DXF files on Pinterest

Pinterest is less of a site that offers free DXF designs, and more of a resource to help you find free DXF designs. You can use it to look through the variety of DXF designs available, all created by fellow hobbyists. You just need to type in your keywords like ‘free DXF‘ and off you go! Obviously, some of the designs will actually cost you—it’s a matter of refining your search. You might even find a hobbyist or site that offers cheap DXF designs that you’d be willing to pay for. It’s also a great platform for sharing your own designs or creations.

Free Cheat Sheet: CAD Technical Terms Explained https://www.scan2cad.com/blog/freebies/cad-technical-terms-explained/ Mon, 25 Nov 2013 15:50:01 +0000 https://www.scan2cad.com/?p=6018 If you’re new to working with CAD, you’ve probably come across some terminology that you’re not too sure about. Do you know a Bezier curve from an auto deskew? Or a command line from a command file? How about an ASCII? If this all sounds like another language, don’t worry – we’re here to help you become a pro.

We have a full glossary for you to download and refer to at any time just enter your email address below to get your cheat sheet in your inbox.

To get you started here are a few of the most common terms that you should know.

Attached raster image

A raster image that is attached to a vector file. When the vector file is loaded into a CAD program, the raster image is automatically loaded as well, at the correct scale and in the correct position. Note that the raster image is not actually contained in the vector file. If the raster image is moved, deleted or renamed it will no longer be attached to the vector file.

BMP

File extension for a bitmap. You can use Scan2CAD to convert BMP to DXF, DWG, or another vector file type.

CNC

Computer numeric cutting. Cutting of shapes and profiles from metal, etc. Raster to vector conversion is frequently used in CNC for converting raster images to vector outlines that can be cut with a CNC machine.

Compressed file

File that has been reduced in file size by compressing the data it contains. The reduction in file size that can be achieved depends on the level of detail in the file and the compression method used. Note that compression only affects the size of the file when it is saved. As soon as you open it up in a software program such as Scan2CAD or Photoshop, it expands back to its uncompressed size.

Despeckle

The automatic removal of unwanted dirt or noise from a raster image’s background.

Dots per inch (DPI)

The resolution of a printed page, expressed in the number of printer dots in an inch. Often used as a synonym for pixels per inch.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format. A 256 color raster file format that uses lossless compression, usually used for web graphics. Not normally recommended for raster to vector conversion as GIF files are typically too low resolution to be useful.

Raster (raster image, raster file)

An image made up of rows and columns of pixels of two (black and white) or more colors. Scanners save images as raster files. Typical raster file formats are BMP, TIFF and JPEG.

Raster to vector conversion

R2V. Process of converting raster files, which cannot be edited in CAD, into CAD-editable vector files such as DXF. Often done automatically by raster to vector conversion software such as Scan2CAD. Aka vectorization.
