AutoCAD, on a desktop computer
Pro/ENGINEER, feature based models
PDM, such Pro/PDM, Intralink, Windchill from PTC’s world and Teamcenter from Siemens, etc…
OnShape, CAD & PDM integral
Generative design…FEA incorporated at the early outset of the design. This is where we are today.

If by 1000MD, you mean ANVIL 1000 MD, then yes, it was far better than AutoCAD. And it’s hard to beat Autodesk Inventor.

I came in the scene in mid 80’s and I’ll fill in a couple items of missing information. Dr Patrick J Hanratty went on to develop ANVIL software at his company MCS Manufacturing Consulting Services in Irvine CA. His me software was a successor to Adam. That is ultimately ANVIL-5000(tm) was the last great version it included complex 3D surfaces Boolean Solids and 5 Axis Cam machining, Dr Hanratty sold his source code to many other CAD company’s including UNIGRAPHICS arguably the longest lasting and most renowned CAD software of all time. I worked for the legendary Ed Bell the Purveyor of CAD/CAM Technology at GMS in Santa Ana. GMS had every major mini and micro computer imaginable all connected by Kermit. The team there was brilliant and could do anything. And it was only about a dozen people with over 100 years of combined CAD CAM expertise at the time. The MCS Developers we’re also brilliant like Jon Prune who invented VERICUT. And Glenn Coleman who did the Coffin demo and later created REST Machining with SURFCAM. And later more foundational high speed machining algorithms. GMS sold the first versions of ProEngineer. And 1000MD arguable better than AutoCAD. I was a Smartcam demo jockey. I sold PCs with the WEITEK math coprocessor chip that’s was a $1000 alone and Verteq graphics cards. We had customers all across the United States. Well those were the good old days and we’ve moved on the PC is now king and Solidworks became the new Pro Engineer and MasterCam rules the Machining world. But look out Fusion 360 is incredible doing most everything. But let’s mention Rhino and finally ZBRUSH the later is beyond incredible. Kudos to all the great minds that brought us this far. And kudos to those of us that are still in the game. And kudos to the OA for a great article!
