“Scan2CAD offers a great way to speed up the process of converting raster images into vector images. The text recognition feature is quite powerful even managed to recognize some handwritten text! Even when I fed it deliberately awkward images, it produces some impressive results”

Frequently Asked PDF to DWG Questions

What is the most reliable method to convert PNG images into editable DWG files for CAD use?

plus icon minus icon

Professional-grade conversion software programs, such as Scan2CAD, are the most reliable methods to convert PNG images to DWG files. They ship with dedicated tools to clean raster images, automatically convert the raster elements, and drawing tools to trace over missing objects. They give you complete control over not only the conversion process but also your files and data.

Can I convert a PNG floor plan into vector DWG linework suitable for architectural drafting?

plus icon minus icon

Yes. In fact, Scan2CAD’s default architectural preset has the ideal settings for converting floor plans. These settings, which cover aspects such as the hatch angle, thickness of and gap between dash lines, line width, minimum arc radius, and more, are intended to give you the best results when converting a PNG floor plan and other typical architectural drawings into vector DWG linework.

How does converting a PNG to DWG compare to traditional raster-to-vector workflows?

plus icon minus icon

Traditional raster-to-vector workflows were manual. CAD Drafters would trace over every line by hand using a stylus pen or mouse. Manual tracing is indeed slow and strenuous; it was even slower if you were working with a complex image. On the other hand, modern PNG-to-DWG conversion tools like Scan2CAD automatically recognize raster elements and convert them to their respective vector elements. They are, therefore, faster.

Which CAD tools offer native or plugin-based support for PNG to DWG conversion?

plus icon minus icon

Scan2CAD is a standalone professional-grade CAD converter. AutoCAD’s Raster Design Toolset offer tools to convert PNG and other raster image formats to DWG objects. DraftSight’s Image Tracer converts the raster objects in PNG images to editable geometric objects stored in the DWG format. nanoCAD is another CAD tool that natively supports vectorization, while BricsCAD supports vectorization plugins.

Is manual vector tracing necessary after converting a PNG to DWG format?

plus icon minus icon

Manual tracing may be necessary in cases where you observe missing vector objects in the converted CAD drawing. Scan2CAD is quite effective at recognizing geometric elements and text in your PNG image and converting them to their corresponding CAD vector elements. But this vectorization feature may not always be successful, with Scan2CAD sometimes converting/vectorizing only the elements it can recognize. At that point, you will have to use Scan2CAD’s built-in drawing tools to manually trace over the missing sections.

What image resolution is ideal for accurate PNG to DWG conversions in construction documentation?

plus icon minus icon

We recommend a resolution of at least 300 DPI (Dots per Inch). The less-than-optimal resolution in a low-quality PNG image only results in a low-quality DWG drawing post conversion. If your workflow entails scanning drawings, saving them as PNG files, and then converting them to the DWG format, we further recommend that your scanner’s resolution setting be 300 DPI or higher.

Can I retain drawing scale and dimensions when importing PNG files as DWG?

plus icon minus icon

Yes, using Scan2CAD, which lets you choose the scale factor through the Scale Options dialog box. You may edit the scale factor (e.g. 1:1) and you may define the scaling using a measurement. You can open the Scale Options dialog box by clicking the File menu and choosing Scale Options from the drop-down menu.

Are there specific settings or file prep steps to improve PNG to DWG conversion accuracy?

plus icon minus icon

Scan2CAD lets you improve PNG to DWG conversion accuracy by cleaning the raster drawing before conversion. On Scan2CAD, the cleaning process involves changing one or more of these settings: remove speckles and holes, thicken lines, adjust brightness and contrast, negate the image, smooth lines, and reduce colors. You do not have to select all these settings, especially if you already have a high-quality PNG image.

How do line clarity and background color in PNG files affect the DWG output?

plus icon minus icon

We recommend removing speckles and holes as well as the background color because failure to do so causes Scan2CAD’s conversion engine to recognize them as objects and subsequently convert them to vector. A multi-colored background affects contrast, with each color recognized and converted as a separate entity. Speckles and holes, on the other hand, become unwanted objects that generally also affect the layouts and geometry of the lines and arcs.

Can converted DWG files from PNG be used directly in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, or Revit workflows?

plus icon minus icon

Yes. All DWG files created from PNG using professional-grade conversion software like Scan2CAD can be opened with any CAD software that supports the DWG file format. These files feature vector objects that can be manipulated using CAD software programs such as AutoCAD, BricsCAD, Revit, and more.
