We recommend a resolution of at least 300 DPI (Dots per Inch). The less-than-optimal resolution in a low-quality PNG image only results in a low-quality DWG drawing post conversion. If your workflow entails scanning drawings, saving them as PNG files, and then converting them to the DWG format, we further recommend that your scanner’s resolution setting be 300 DPI or higher.

You can open the Scale Options dialog box by clicking the File menu and choosing Scale Options from the drop-down menu.

Scan2CAD lets you improve PNG to DWG conversion accuracy by cleaning the raster drawing before conversion. On Scan2CAD, the cleaning process involves changing one or more of these settings: remove speckles and holes, thicken lines, adjust brightness and contrast, negate the image, smooth lines, and reduce colors. You do not have to select all these settings, especially if you already have a high-quality PNG image.

We recommend removing speckles and holes as well as the background color because failure to do so causes Scan2CAD’s conversion engine to recognize them as objects and subsequently convert them to vector. A multi-colored background affects contrast, with each color recognized and converted as a separate entity. Speckles and holes, on the other hand, become unwanted objects that generally also affect the layouts and geometry of the lines and arcs.
